Phuc Thuan develops specialty tea growing area.

Amidst the bustling urban life, while many traditional craft villages are gradually disappearing, Phuc Thuan ward still retains its unique greenness – the green of its tea hills. Tea plants not only hold economic value but also represent the "soul of the countryside," a cultural feature and a cherished memory passed down through generations of local people.

In recent years, urbanization in Phuc Thuan has accelerated, with many new residential areas and roads being developed. However, amidst the high-rise buildings and wide concrete roads, approximately 600 hectares of tea plantations still stretch out. These meticulously cared-for tea hills preserve the age-old tea-making traditions of the local people. Alongside this, businesses and cooperatives in the area operate effectively, contributing to the dissemination of the finest values of the Phuc Thuan tea brand.

Mr. Thach Tho Cong, Director of Cong Tam Minh Duc Tea Cooperative, shared: "Preserving tea plants and the craft is both a responsibility and a source of pride for us. The basic production process still follows traditional methods to maintain the traditional flavor. Simultaneously, the cooperative applies VietGAP standards and introduces machinery for deep processing, creating products that meet OCOP 3-4 star standards."

Thanks to its systematic approach, Phuc Thuan tea has firmly established its position in the province and is gradually expanding its market through e-commerce channels. Alongside this, local people are developing a new direction: experiential tourism , visiting tea hills and learning about the production process so that tourists can witness and experience the tea culture firsthand.

Mr. Nguyen Tung Duong, representative of Viet Thai Tea Joint Stock Company, said: "Phuc Thuan tea has a natural aroma, a mild astringent taste, and a deep sweet aftertaste. We have invested in modern production lines and followed strict procedures to preserve the tea's flavor, while also developing an organic tea growing area associated with geographical indications."

According to representatives of the Phuc Thuan ward government, preserving the traditional tea-growing profession and its area of cultivation is a matter of concern. In reality, some areas have been reduced due to house construction and land-use changes. Many young workers have left the tea-growing profession to seek other jobs, making it difficult to inherit the traditional craft.

Mr. Ta Viet Dung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phuc Thuan Ward, said: Phuc Thuan Ward has identified tea as its main crop, linked to cultural identity. The government is reviewing land use, protecting tea-growing areas from the risk of conversion; supporting people in establishing cooperatives and processing businesses, and developing product brands. At the same time, it is coordinating with banks to create favorable loan conditions for expanding production.

Currently, over 70% of the tea growing area in Phuc Thuan ward meets VietGAP standards. Many local tea products have established their brands and become specialties of the province. On average, each tea-growing household earns between 200 and 300 million VND per year; cooperatives and businesses earn billions of VND in profit thanks to investment in deep processing and expansion of online sales channels.

However, tea growers still face difficulties due to climate change, rising prices of agricultural supplies, and limitations in post-harvest preservation. Some roadside areas are at risk of being concretized, reducing the area available for tea cultivation.

To preserve the greenness of the tea plants amidst urbanization, the government and people of Phuc Thuan are striving to develop sustainable production, while simultaneously linking tea cultivation with tourism, e-commerce, and building a brand for local specialties. These efforts are giving the tea industry new vitality, aligning it with the pace of modern urban development.
