Speaking to reporters in Canberra, Prime Minister Albanese said the funding agreement shows that Australia is an important security partner for the Solomon Islands and will help strengthen regional security. Accordingly, Australia will provide funding, training and infrastructure to the Pacific island nation to expand its police force.
In a joint statement with his Solomon counterpart Jeremiah Manele, Prime Minister Albanese said the move "responds to the Solomon Islands' strong desire to build long-term security capabilities, thereby gradually reducing its dependence on external partners". Canberra will provide its partners with 190 million AUD over four years.
Australian police provided security for the Solomon Islands from 2003 to 2017 at the request of the islands ' government following an internal conflict.
In 2021, Australian forces continued to help the Pacific island nation maintain security following the 2021 anti-government riots in Honiara.
