As a driver who regularly drives on National Highway 61 from Vi Thanh ward to Rach Gia ward to deliver goods, Mr. Phan Van Vinh said: Having to travel through a damaged road in An Giang province with a length of dozens of kilometers is also a haunting, frustrating road for him as well as many other drivers.
“My truck was transporting goods from Ho Chi Minh City to deliver goods from Tay Ninh (former Long An area) to the final destination Rach Gia in An Giang province, a distance of about 300 km, but all three drivers were uneasy about the road from Rach Tia pagoda in Go Quao commune to Ben Nhut bridge in Long Thanh commune. Because this road is full of potholes; among them, there are deep holes, several square meters wide that the driver cannot avoid, so he had to take a risk and many times the front wheel collapsed, causing the car to stall, which was very dangerous,” said Mr. Vinh.
Mr. Le Hoai Minh, residing in Ninh Quoi commune, Ca Mau province, said that his family had planned to visit and travel in Ha Tien during the summer of 2025, but the trip was canceled due to concerns that dozens of kilometers of National Highway 61 and National Highway 80 in An Giang province had been degraded for many years, causing difficulties and dangers for traffic.
“In previous years, my family traveled to Ha Tien every summer, but we were worried about the bad traffic, especially the section of National Highway 61 from Rach Tia Pagoda to Ben Nhut Bridge and the section of National Highway 80 from Hon Dat to Kien Luong, which had many damaged areas and potholes. In the summer of 2025, I watched many drivers posting videos on social media expressing their anger at the severe deterioration of the section of National Highway 61 passing through An Giang province. Seeing the difficulties, my family temporarily stopped going to Ha Tien this year,” said Mr. Minh.
Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan (72) residing in Long Thanh commune, An Giang province said: His family lives near National Highway 61 and due to work, he often rides his motorbike on this degraded section of National Highway 61. Even though he has been riding it for weeks, even days, each time he rides his motorbike on the road, it is still a source of anxiety for the old man.
“For about 2 months now, there have been many storms, muddy water stagnant in potholes, slippery roads that can easily cause motorbike riders to fall. Not only that, because truck and car drivers are avoiding deep holes, they drive onto the roadway reserved for vehicles going in the opposite direction, creating chaos, disorder, and potential traffic accidents. I really hope that the authorities will pay attention and take measures to restore the road surface to a flat, durable surface so that people can travel safely,” Mr. Tuan shared.
According to Mr. Ngo Thanh Hung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Dinh Hoa Commune, An Giang Province, National Highway 61 passing through the commune (from Rach Tia Bridge to Duong Xuong Bridge) is about 10 km long and has seriously degraded and damaged, with many potholes, making it difficult for people to travel. The locality has also received many complaints and recommendations from voters and people about the deterioration and many traffic accidents on this damaged road section.
Chairman of the People's Committee of Dinh Hoa Commune, Ngo Thanh Hung, said: The People's Committee of Dinh Hoa Commune has proposed to the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Construction to consider allocating funds for emergency repairs in the last months of 2025 to ensure smooth and safe traffic, serving the travel needs of people and the need to transport goods. Because this is a vital route serving the transport of goods to neighboring areas and connecting with provinces and cities in the region,"
According to the report of the Department of Construction sent to the People's Committee of An Giang province (August 31, 2025) on the urgent repair of National Highway 61 section Km67+174 - Km77+250 (the section coinciding with Ho Chi Minh road), the Department of Construction has coordinated with Road Management Area IV on the handover of National Highway 61 section from Km67+174 - Km94+273 to Road Management Area IV for management, operation and maintenance. Over the years, the Department of Construction has maintained and repaired with regular maintenance funds to maintain the ability to operate. The Department has repeatedly proposed maintenance plans for medium and major repairs but has not been approved.
Recently, the Ministry of Construction issued Document No. 9992/BXD-KHTC dated September 16, 2025, sent to the National Assembly Delegation of An Giang province to respond to the petition of voters of An Giang province sent after the 9th Session, 15th National Assembly regarding the petition to soon upgrade and repair National Highway 61 from An Truong hamlet to Ben Nhut, which is currently in a state of degradation and severe damage, causing obstacles for people participating in traffic.
The Ministry of Construction said that, implementing the provisions of Decree No. 165/2024/ND-CP dated December 26, 2024 of the Government detailing and guiding the implementation of a number of articles of the Road Law and Article 77 of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety, after agreeing with the People's Committee of An Giang province, the Ministry of Construction has proposed and the Ministry of Finance has issued decisions to transfer road traffic infrastructure assets (national highways in An Giang province, including National Highway 61) from the Ministry of Construction to the People's Committee of An Giang province.
"Therefore, currently, the People's Committee of An Giang province is responsible for managing, exploiting, maintaining and investing in National Highway 61, so we request the National Assembly Delegation and voters of An Giang province to consult with the People's Committee of An Giang province to study and arrange investment capital to repair and upgrade National Highway 61," the Ministry of Construction's official dispatch stated.
National Highway 61 is the main artery connecting the center of An Giang province with Ca Mau province, Can Tho city and the border area of Ha Tien. The serious deterioration of the road has greatly affected the circulation, transportation of goods and local economic development.
