Vietnam has the advantage.
The match between the Vietnamese and Indonesian national teams at Viet Tri Stadium, part of the third round of Group B in the 2024 Southeast Asian Football Championship (AFF Cup), will take place at 8 PM tonight (December 15th). This is the first match for Coach Kim Sang-sik's team at their "new home" in the region's biggest tournament.
According to football enthusiasts, the match between the Vietnamese and Indonesian national teams is of great importance. The result of this match will determine which team will advance to the semi-finals of the AFF Cup 2024 as the winner of Group B. Therefore, both teams are highly determined to achieve a good result.
The match between the Vietnamese and Indonesian national teams will be broadcast live on VTV andFPT Play platforms.
The Vietnamese team has the opportunity to overtake Indonesia at the top of the standings.
In this match, the Vietnamese team holds a significant advantage, especially playing at home. Furthermore, coach Kim Sang-sik's team had a bye in the second match and spent six days training and studying their opponent. Meanwhile, the Indonesian team faces a demanding travel schedule, having to fly back and forth between countries for matches.
The Indonesian national team, already lacking its strongest squad (as many clubs refused to release players), has now lost another key player. Young talent Marselino Ferdinand received a red card in the previous match (against Laos) and will certainly be suspended. In many respects, the Indonesian team is at a disadvantage compared to Kim Sang-sik's squad.
Heating up before the big moment.
Coach Kim Sang-sik stated before the match: "I see a large number of reporters attending the press conference, which proves how important tomorrow's match is. For Vietnam and Indonesia, this is a match of pride. Indonesia recently drew with Laos, and facing Vietnam is a crucial moment for them to overcome their difficulties. But we have prepared thoroughly, with a process that has lasted for weeks and months. We will aim for victory."
Coach Kim is determined to win.

Regarding the opinion that the high frequency of matches would affect the quality of the teams, Coach Kim Sang-sik said: “The Indonesian team played against Laos on December 12th, then traveled to Vietnam on December 13th. The Indonesian players' physical condition is not at its best, however, this is a common difficulty because the teams are competing in the same tournament. The Vietnamese team is also in a similar situation; immediately after the match against Indonesia on December 15th, we had to travel to the Philippines to prepare for the match against the host nation on December 18th. Therefore, I had to plan a rotation of the squad to ensure the best possible strength.”
Coach Shin Tae-yong said: "The Indonesian national team has had a packed and difficult schedule. We played Myanmar away on December 9th, then returned home to play Laos on December 12th, and then went to Vietnam on December 13th to prepare for this match. Such a schedule presents a difficult challenge for the players and coaching staff."
We don't have our best squad like we did in the World Cup qualifiers because the ASEAN Cup isn't within FIFA Days, but I still have many good players to focus on in tomorrow's match. Indonesia has a good throw-in player, but I'm not sure how many opportunities he'll have to utilize that strength in a specific match. However, my top priority remains giving opportunities to young talents."
Mr. Shin continued: "Vietnam has a full squad and is the strongest team in Group B, while we are using a young team to prepare for the U23 tournaments next year. Clearly, there is a huge difference in playing level between the two sides, which means a significant disadvantage awaits Indonesia when they face Vietnam."
All our available resources are being prioritized for the World Cup qualifiers. I hope the fans will be understanding of the team and the players if Indonesia doesn't achieve good results.”
Table B standings after 2 matches
This is a good opportunity for the Vietnamese team to reclaim the top spot from Indonesia. Currently, the Indonesian team (having played 2 matches) is leading Group B with 4 points and a goal difference of +1. The Vietnamese team (having played only 1 match) is second in Group B with 3 points and a goal difference of +3.
Another match in Group B of the AFF Cup 2024 also takes place today (December 15th): the clash between the Laos national team and the Philippines national team. This encounter begins at 5:30 PM (Vietnam time) at the Laotian National Stadium (Vientiane).
