According to Interesting Engineering , robot dogs are increasingly being used in various roles in one of Asia's richest economies , Singapore. Specifically, in this country, four-legged robots have been assigned a number of tasks including guarding bus stops, guiding the blind, patrolling construction sites and assisting with social services.

Developed by researchers at the National University of Singapore, the robot dogs are a more accessible alternative to traditional guide dogs, which are expensive and limited in number. The robots use AI and image recognition software to respond to complex commands and navigate diverse environments.

Tests with blind people have shown that the robot dogs are capable of handling stairs and uneven terrain. Singapore is currently testing the technology in transport hubs and parks.

With expanding uses in social services, infrastructure inspection and security, robot dogs are becoming a practical solution in areas that benefit from their mobility, endurance and sensing capabilities, according to The Straits Times .

With more manufacturers, including from China entering the market, robot dogs in Singapore now cost as little as $2,700 , contributing to their growing popularity.

According to Singaporean media reports, the number of robotics companies in Singapore has increased from 200 to more than 300 since 2023, reflecting the rapid growth of the robotics industry in the country.
