Finding a way to get on the shelves of Thai supermarkets

The Ministry of Industry and Trade and Central Retail Group in Vietnam jointly organized the Vietnamese Goods Week in Thailand in 2023 with the theme The Magical Taste of Vietnam - Southern Flavors - focusing on introducing and promoting culture, tourism and regional specialties from the Mekong Delta region, Ho Chi Minh City, from August 16 to 20.

In particular, Khanh Hoa province has one participating enterprise, which is D&T Khanh Hoa Seaweed Joint Stock Company (D&T Company). This is a unit with 14 years of experience in the seaweed industry, recognized by the Vietnam Record Organization as having the largest farming area and harvest output of Japanese seaweed in Vietnam (in 2020).

At the end of 2020, when being certified for a record, D&T Company had cultivated over 45 hectares of seaweed in Ninh Hoa town; the harvest output was 7 tons/day, over 2,500 tons/year. The seaweed cultivation area was inspected and recognized by Japanese experts as an area that produces valuable and high-quality seaweed products. The processing and packaging factory with an area of ​​over 8,000 m2, meets export standards to foreign countries (HACCP, ISO, FDA...).

Mr. Nguyen Quang Duy - Director of D&T Company - said that the company's 4-star OCOP seaweed product is being exported to the US, Canada, Korea, Taiwan, and Japan.

“The Thai market, the unit has only exported through unofficial channels. This event creates a great opportunity for the unit to meet partners for cooperation and business” , Mr. Duy said and added: After the day of connecting supply and demand (B2B Matching) between Vietnamese enterprises and purchasing units from the Central Group, D&T Company was "hurriedly" promoted by many partners to bring sea grapes products to Thai consumer shelves. The products are oriented to be "green - clean - completely natural", suitable for consumer tastes and standards of this market.

Expanding official export channels

Director of D&T Company said: Sea grapes are a completely new product in the market of the Golden Temple country. Because the sea of ​​Thailand is not suitable for cultivating sea grapes, but only suitable for the conditions in the Central Coast region of Vietnam.

According to Mr. Duy, Khanh Hoa's coastline is surrounded by mountains and wave-break bays, which are favorable for growing seaweed. In addition, there are many areas of deep, clean, and sheltered water, which are very favorable for developing seaweed in the direction of enhancing the local brand.

It is known that the area for raising seaweed in Khanh Hoa is 88 hectares with an output of 427 tons. The number of establishments/enterprises purchasing and processing seaweed in Khanh Hoa province is about 20 establishments (2021 data).

Mr. Duy also shared that the consumption habits and tastes of Thai people have many similarities with Vietnamese people, which is a favorable condition for the company's products to be consumed here. In the near future, the company will connect with partners to export products to the Thai market as soon as possible.

“The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Khanh Hoa Department of Industry and Trade have created conditions for our businesses to access such important events. In the future, D&T Company hopes that its products as well as those of Vietnam will be available on shelves in countries around the world ,” Mr. Duy hopes.

Talking to Cong Thuong Newspaper , Ms. Phan Thi Thu Cuc - Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Industry and Trade of Khanh Hoa province said: D&T Company is one of the pioneering enterprises in trade promotion, expanding domestic and foreign markets. The unit's products are very diverse, meeting international standards for export to foreign markets. In particular, the domestic market is extremely developed and favored by consumers.

In order for Vietnamese goods to penetrate deeper into the global supply chain, the Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Industry and Trade of Khanh Hoa province suggested: Vietnamese enterprises need to improve production capacity, comply with strict standards of foreign markets, ensure food safety and disease prevention criteria to meet export requirements.

2023 is the 6th time the event has been held in Thailand. To date, the Goods Week program has helped 19 Vietnamese enterprises to export directly and stably to Thailand through the supermarket chain of Central Group Thailand.

At the opening ceremony of the event, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai emphasized: In recent years, the Vietnamese Government has created favorable conditions for businesses to promote direct exports to distribution systems in markets, including Thailand. As an important annual event within the framework of this activity, the Vietnam Goods Week in Thailand 2023 has created a strong spread, contributing to promoting positive growth in import and export turnover between the two countries, through connecting hundreds of small and medium enterprises.
