Revolutionary Theatre - Imbued with National Pride

In recent years, the Ho Chi Minh City stage has been bustling with hundreds of new plays, meeting the needs of a large audience. In particular, many historical revolutionary plays have been invested in and staged, arousing national pride, aiming to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification.

Praise the heroic revolutionary spirit

In the series of historical revolutionary stage works released recently, the most prominent are: Old Marks (Small Stage 5B Drama Theater); Journey to Find the Portrait (Ho Chi Minh City Drama Theater); Comrades (Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association); Myrtle Rows, Heaven's Gate Day (Trinh Kim Chi Drama Theater); Burning Fields (Quoc Thao Drama Theater); White Virgin Flowers (New Impression Company); the plays Red Coral, Motherland's Ho, Hau River's Ho (Tran Huu Trang Drama Theater); People on the outskirts (Dai Viet New Drama Theater); Heroic opera (Ho Chi Minh City Hat Boi Art Theater); Sunset dance (Ho Chi Minh City Symphony - Music - Dance Theater); Sac Forest Legend dance (Military Zone 7 Performing Arts Troupe); Fatherland dance (Ho Chi Minh City Dance College); Heroic Nguyen Trung Truc water puppetry, Before the waves (Phuong Nam Art Theater)...

Not stuck in the old style of staging, the above works attract audiences with their own unique features. As with the play Comrades, the image of Uncle Ho's soldiers is built with the spirit of vanguard, always at the forefront of all difficulties from wartime to peacetime.

“Comrades is a difficult script to stage. However, the “essence” of the play is very beautiful when praising the national spirit and solidarity. If everyone is for the country, has the same aspirations, then everyone can join hands to build the country...”, said director - People's Artist Tran Ngoc Giau.

The dance “Sunset” has a different and novel view of the revolutionary war. Sharing his views on the work, choreographer Nguyen Phuc Hung, Head of the HBSO Dance Troupe, said: “Although it is still about war, the dance does not recreate the cruelty, but mainly creates beautiful and unique performances, associated with portraits, memorabilia and stories on the sidelines of the war, so that the audience can see stories with many emotional levels, deep and touching, behind the war...”.

Inspire pride and patriotism

Conveying love for homeland, country, and revolutionary ideals without being dogmatic or heavy-handed is the common direction of theatrical works on revolutionary history.

People's Artist My Uyen, Director of the 5B Vo Van Tan Small Stage Drama Theater, shared: “When I started working on the play Dau Xua (author: Nguyen Thanh Binh; director: People's Artist Tran Minh Ngoc), I always wanted the work to be gentle, soft, and imbued with love. The story shows closeness and reality, helping to evoke in young audiences remembrance and pride in the history of our ancestors…”.

In the same direction, the cai luong play Nguoi ven do (script: Minh Khoa, cai luong adaptation: Nguyen Gia Nghiem, director: Meritorious Artist Hoa Ha) recreated the fiery atmosphere of heroic struggle, the spirit of the Vietnamese people, resilient and indomitable in the face of invaders.

Reproduced from the original script first performed in 1976, the new version of The People on the Urban has a novel and modern structure, character images, and dramatic plot. In particular, the young cast - who were born and raised when the country was at peace - showed a difference in their acting style compared to the previous generation of artists - who had experienced the fierce war.

“We hope the play will help the audience better understand the sacrifices, losses, and indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people, the factors that contributed to the historic victory of April 30, 1975,” playwright Hoang Song Viet, the “manager” of Dai Viet New Reformed Theater, confided.

50 years of peace and unity of the country, that great common joy is thanks to the countless sacrifices of our ancestors in the cause of defending and protecting the Fatherland. Each traditional revolutionary story has been brought to the stage by the scriptwriters and directors with softness and simplicity, helping the work easily touch the hearts of the audience, especially the young generation today.

“If stage works with revolutionary historical themes skillfully exploit the psychological lives of the characters, delve into conflicting details that are close to people of the new era, and reflect perspectives on emotions, love, and life views, they will more easily gain the sympathy of the audience,” said People's Artist Tran Minh Ngoc.
