The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced a landmark change on April 21, effective from the next Oscar season, taking place in March 2026.
Specifically, voters will have to prove that they have fully watched all the films in each category before casting their final vote.
This is the first time in the history of the prestigious awards that the Academy has adopted such a strict rule - a move aimed at addressing long-standing concerns that many people choose films based on emotion or reputation without actually watching all the nominated works.
Previously, the Oscars operated on an “honor system,” meaning Academy members voluntarily pledged that they had seen all nominated films.
However, with the number of films increasing in recent years, many admit that they cannot or do not fully fulfill this obligation.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, to implement the new rule, AMPAS members will have to watch movies on a separate online platform, which will track and record their viewing.
For films viewed at theaters or film festivals, they will have to fill out a form confirming the time and location of viewing.
The Best Picture category, which has 10 nominees, has long been the “battlefield” of flashy campaigns, with studios often holding lavish screenings, parties, and Q&A sessions with cast and directors to convince AMPAS members.
In the new context, these events can still take place, but their influence will be somewhat controlled when watching movies becomes mandatory, no longer spontaneous.
AMPAS also spoke out about the controversy surrounding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) last season, especially with films like “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Perez.”
AMPAS asserts that AI and digital tools will not give a film an advantage or disadvantage in winning nominations.
The evaluation of artistic achievements is mainly based on the core level of human contribution in the creative process when selecting works worthy of honor./.
