Officials of the administration of US President Joe Biden recently commented on the future of the Trilateral Security Treaty between the US, the UK and Australia (AUKUS) during Donald Trump's term as leader, starting January 20, 2025.

On December 19, US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell expressed hope that Senator Marco Rubio, who was chosen by President Trump to be Secretary of State, will maintain many of the Indo-Pacific initiatives of outgoing President Joe Biden.

Those initiatives could include the AUKUS Treaty, which would be signed in 2021, Campbell told reporters in Washington after Trump's transition team visited the State Department recently, according to SCMP .

“I think we’re going to see more engagement in the Indo-Pacific than some of the other areas in the region,” the US diplomat stressed. “There’s a deep interest in every element of the bilateral relationship between the US and China.”

Campbell also said the incoming administration has questions about US technology policy under President Biden, steps taken to strengthen deterrence across the Indo-Pacific, military deployments and how to cooperate and engage regularly with Beijing.

Previously, on December 17, in an interview with Australia's Lowy Institute, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan also affirmed that the AUKUS agreement is consistent with the "burden-sharing" view that President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly emphasized.

Accordingly, Mr. Sullivan believes that AUKUS will continue to exist under President Trump, because this agreement both strengthens the US deterrence capacity in the Indo-Pacific and helps develop the US submarine industry.

The AUKUS deal, signed in 2021, is worth a total of AUD 368 billion ($245 billion) through 2055. Under it, Australia will buy Virginia-class submarines from the US and work with the UK to build a new class of nuclear submarines. Australia also agreed to invest $3 billion in US shipyards.
