According to Dr. Vo Ke Dat, 6 years ago, unfortunately, the hair of a 13-year-old girl was caught in the engine of a moving motorboat. She was fortunately saved but lost almost all of her scalp. The patient underwent surgery to cover the missing scalp with a free flap taken from the thigh measuring 16x19 cm.
However, when he recovered, more than half of the left side of his scalp was scarred and unable to grow hair. Since then, he has become self-conscious and always wishes to have hair back. After examination, the doctor decided to perform tissue expansion technique to treat the baby.
The doctors surgically placed tissue expansion bags under the baby’s right temple (the hairy scalp area), then gradually inflated these bags to stretch the skin. During each inflation, the doctor will check the skin condition, capillary blood flow to ensure health, as well as “nourish” the baby’s stretched skin.
“During the last 3 tissue expansions, the child suffered from hair loss and was cured. 9 weeks after the tissue expansion, the patient had to be hospitalized again due to scar tissue expansion that exposed the bag, and ischemia and necrosis of part of the scalp. At this time, the child's health was stable, so the doctor decided to perform surgery to remove part of the skin flap in the left temporal region and transfer the skin flap from the expanded tissue area to cover it,” informed Dr. Vo Ke Dat.
At the same time, it was said that after 2 weeks, the wounds were completely healed, and the stretched tissue continued to grow hair normally. Currently, almost the entire head of the baby has hair again.
According to Dr. Vo Ke Dat Dat, tissue expansion is a method of regenerating the scalp area that cannot have hair, with high aesthetic results and this method is applied to treat baldness, head burns, melanoma, loss of scalp due to accidents... to restore aesthetics.
Patients from 1 year old to middle age can perform this technique. However, the bag pumping process requires a long time, requiring the cooperation of the patient and relatives in caring for and encouraging the patient to have the best results.
