School canteen temporarily suspended, cause of suspected food poisoning among 23 students clarified

On September 26th, the People's Committee of Kien Hai district (Kien Giang province) announced that, regarding the incident where 23 students suffered from stomach aches, fever, and diarrhea after eating food at the canteen of Kien Hai Secondary and High School and were hospitalized with suspected food poisoning, the local authorities have decided to temporarily suspend operations at the canteen to investigate the cause.

The local authorities requested the school to create all conditions for the above students to be treated, rested, and healthy before returning to school as usual. The health of the above students is now stable again.

Regarding the incident, on September 25th, the Food Safety Department also issued a document requesting the Kien Giang Department of Health , the Kien Hai District People's Committee, and relevant units to investigate and clarify the cause of the suspected food poisoning of 23 students; collect food samples to determine the cause; temporarily suspend the canteen in question; and especially to strictly handle any food safety violations (if any) and promptly publicize the results.

Previously, Tuoi Tre Online reported that from September 23rd to 25th, 23 out of 47 students who ate breakfast (sweet and sour chicken rice, pork rib rice, vermicelli, fish cake sandwiches, etc.) at the canteen of Kien Hai District Secondary and High School experienced fever, stomach pain, and diarrhea. Of these, 8 students were transferred by their families to Kien Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital for treatment.

Doctors at the hospital examined and diagnosed an intestinal infection. Local authorities also took food samples from the school canteen to test to determine the cause.
