In recent years, due to mosaic disease, cassava yield has decreased. The prices of other crops such as bananas, rubber, etc. have been unstable. Therefore, some farmers in Dong Ha hamlet have switched to growing some fruit trees that are suitable for the soil, bringing higher economic efficiency, including the model of growing Indonesian red-fleshed jackfruit.
Ms. Bui Thi Tuyet Ngan - Vice President of Tan Dong Commune Farmers' Association said: "In the hamlet, there are over 200 hectares of Indo red-fleshed jackfruit trees, of which about 120 hectares are being harvested. According to people's calculations, after deducting expenses, the profit earned each year is nearly 1 billion VND/ha".
Mr. Nguyen Gia Nam, residing in Group 9, Dong Ha Hamlet, is a farmer growing Indo red-fleshed jackfruit, recognized by the People's Committee of Tan Chau District as a product meeting 3-star OCOP standards at the end of 2024.
Mr. Nguyen Gia Nam said that before, he grew cassava and then switched to growing banana trees, but the economic efficiency was not high due to difficulties caused by cassava mosaic disease, and the price of bananas was also very unstable. Therefore, he was determined to find another way to develop his family's economy. On the internet, he saw that people grew jackfruit trees with high economic growth, so he and some farmers in the hamlet went to the Western provinces to learn about planting methods and soil conditions to see if they were suitable for the local land. When he realized that this land could be suitable for growing jackfruit, he decided to buy nearly 2,000 Indonesian jackfruit seedlings to test-plant on 2 hectares .
According to Mr. Nam, the Indo red-fleshed jackfruit tree is more delicious and sweet than other jackfruit varieties. After 2 years of planting, the jackfruit tree gives the first harvest, with an estimated yield of 30 tons of fruit per hectare per year. After deducting expenses, he earns a profit of nearly 1 billion VND per hectare per year. Currently, his total jackfruit growing area is over 12 hectares, including 4 hectares that are bearing fruit, 4 hectares that are 18 months old and are preparing to bear fruit, and 4 hectares that are about a year old.
In addition to Mr. Nguyen Gia Nam, in Dong Ha hamlet, there are many households that also grow Indo red-fleshed jackfruit. Mr. Nguyen Quy Thuat is one of the pioneers in converting crops to Indo red-fleshed jackfruit. Mr. Thuat said: “This type of tree is very easy to grow and does not take much time to care for. Among the many jackfruit varieties available, Indo red-fleshed jackfruit meets the needs of consumers. Not only does it bring profit to growers, this fruit is also favored by consumers thanks to its sweet taste, red flesh and characteristic aroma. In particular, the Indo red-fleshed jackfruit variety is adapted to the climate and soil here, the tree grows well, produces large and even fruit, and has a high yield.”
According to Mr. Thuat, when planting Indo red-fleshed jackfruit, the most important step is to choose the variety. The variety must have a clear origin, be purchased from a facility registered with the authorities, and have an appropriate planting density to facilitate management and care. Treat the soil before planting by adding lime, organic fertilizer, and pay attention to preventing insects that harm the seedlings; ensure adequate watering in the dry season and avoid flooding in the rainy season. It is best to use a water-saving irrigation system that sprays at the base; use organic fertilizer to make the soil loose, balance the pH, and help the root system develop easily with many small roots, which is not toxic to humans and reduces environmental pollution.
Ms. Bui Thi Tuyet Ngan - Vice President of Tan Dong Commune Farmers' Association said that in the coming time, the Commune Farmers' Association will encourage jackfruit growers to establish cooperatives to link with businesses distributing seedlings, fertilizers, pesticides and purchasing at the best prices. In addition, when participating in cooperatives, farmers will be provided with technical guidance and quality-assured seedlings.
According to Ms. Ngan, The establishment of cooperatives not only creates conditions for farmers to exchange production experiences and stabilize output, but also aims to issue growing area codes, serving farmers' future export goals.
