Strengthening solutions to respond to high tides in early October of the lunar calendar

(CTO) - On the morning of November 18, the high tide at the end of the 9th lunar month rose to the level of alarm level III (2m), low-lying areas and some roads along rivers and canals continued to be flooded due to high tides.

Báo Cần ThơBáo Cần Thơ18/11/2025

According to the forecast of the functional sector, from November 20 to 25, the high tide of the first lunar month of October will appear in the Mekong Delta. Most coastal areas of the Mekong Delta will have a tidal peak exceeding the warning level II and III for many days. In addition, the water flow from the upper Mekong River to the Mekong Delta is at a high level, combined with the high tide of the first lunar month of October, which is likely to cause flooding in many low-lying areas. Therefore, localities in the region need to proactively operate irrigation works, reinforce dykes, embankments, and culverts to limit high tides causing flooding.

Binh Thuy market area (Bui Huu Nghia street, Binh Thuy ward, Can Tho city) is often flooded due to high tides.

In Can Tho City, the high tide in the first month of the 10th lunar month appeared with a water level approximately equal to the high tide level of the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, but lower than the water level of the 15th day of the 9th lunar month by 0.05-0.1m and will cause flooding in low-lying areas, riverside areas, areas outside the dike... in the Cai Con canal basin, Xa No canal and part of the Hau river. In particular, Binh Thuy market, Cach Mang Thang Tam street (Binh Thuy ward), Hoa Luu commune, Nga Bay ward, Phung Hiep commune, Long My ward, Vi Tan ward, Vi Thanh ward... will be deeply flooded. The maximum flooding depth is from 10-30cm, in some places over 35cm.

Cai Khe sluice gate opens and closes in time, limiting high tides causing flooding in the central urban area of Can Tho City.

Can Tho City People's Committee requested relevant units to effectively manage and operate ship locks, sluices, and tide-prevention valves to prevent flooding in the city's core area. Localities need to proactively guard against extreme weather events such as heavy rain, strong thunderstorms accompanied by tornadoes and lightning; high tides combined with heavy rain causing flooding in low-lying areas; mobilize forces to support and guide traffic on deeply flooded roads; focus resources on maintaining, repairing, and reinforcing dikes to prevent flooding, protect residential areas, orchards, and aquaculture areas, etc.
