The specialized competency assessment exam takes place in 2 rounds.
According to Master Nguyen Ngoc Trung, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, this year the specialized competency assessment exam will be held in two rounds: round 1 from May 26-28 and round 2 from June 9-11.

Of which, the number of candidates registered for the first round was more than 2,500 and the second round was more than 1,800. Thus, compared to last year, the total number of candidates taking the exam this year was more than double that of the first year this exam was held.
According to the school’s statistics, the number of candidates registering for the math exam is the highest, with more than 1,370 candidates in both sessions. The English exam has more than 1,170 candidates. Next are literature, chemistry, physics and biology.
In 2023, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education will organize a specialized competency assessment exam in 6 subjects including: mathematics; physics, chemistry, biology, literature and English. Candidates can choose to register for one or more of the above exams to apply for admission to majors that apply the admission method of this exam results.
Candidates take the test on the computer. The math, physics, chemistry and biology tests all last 90 minutes, including objective multiple choice questions and short answer questions. Candidates calculate and fill in the answers in the system. As for the literature test, in addition to the objective multiple choice questions, there is also an essay on a social argumentative topic. The questions are set in an open-ended format with a requirement to write about 600 words. Candidates take the test directly on the system.
The English proficiency test uses the English proficiency assessment format from level 3 to level 5 according to the 6-level foreign language proficiency framework for Vietnam. The test consists of 4 parts, corresponding to all 4 skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
The knowledge content used to assess candidates' abilities mentioned in the exams will closely follow the current general education program, in which the knowledge content in the grade 12 program accounts for about 70-80%. The rest is knowledge content in the grade 10 and 11 programs.

According to Master Nguyen Ngoc Trung, this year Ho Chi Minh City University of Education reserves 30% of its quota for many majors to consider the results of the specialized competency assessment exam combined with high school academic results.
The majors include: mathematics pedagogy, information technology pedagogy, information technology, physics pedagogy, physics, chemistry pedagogy, chemistry, biology pedagogy, literature pedagogy, literature, Vietnamese studies, English pedagogy, English language, Chinese pedagogy, Chinese language, French pedagogy, French language, Russian pedagogy, Russian language, Japanese language, Korean language, primary education, special education, civic education, political education, national defense and security education, technology pedagogy and natural science pedagogy.
For each combination of admission to each major, the main subject is taken from the results of the specialized competency assessment exam organized by Ho Chi Minh City University of Education or Hanoi University of Education. The remaining two subjects in the combination are taken from the results of high school study.
The admission score is determined by: the total score of the specialized competency assessment test organized by Ho Chi Minh City University of Education in 2022, 2023 or Hanoi University of Education in 2023 (converted to a 10-point scale) of the main subject (multiplied by a coefficient of 2), plus the average score of the 6 semesters of high school of the remaining 2 subjects in the group. This total score is converted to a 30-point scale and added with priority points for subjects and regions according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, rounded to two decimal places.
In 2022, the Ho Chi Minh City University of Education's specialized competency assessment exam had a total of 1,978 candidates registered to take the exam. The school reserved about 20% of the quota for 21 majors to consider the scores of this exam, of which the mathematics pedagogy major had the highest standard score at 28.04.
