Satellite images obtained by Newsweek magazine show that the US aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and its strike group were present in the South China Sea on May 4. The event took place while the US and Philippine militaries were conducting their largest annual exercise, Balikatan (Shoulder to Shoulder), from April 21 to May 9.

This is the first US aircraft carrier to operate in the South China Sea since early April, after the USS Carl Vinson left for a new mission in the Middle East.
On the X website, open source intelligence analyst @MT_Anderson said that the ship was first spotted in the area the day before, 118 nautical miles (about 218km) northeast of Scarborough Shoal.
Newsweek 's map shows that the Nimitz had previously been moving in waters east of the Philippines. In an email response to Newsweek , a spokesperson for the US 7th Fleet emphasized that the Nimitz carrier strike group "provides a presence and combat-ready force in the region."
"US 7th Fleet assets operate alongside allies and partners every day to deter aggression and maintain security in the Indo- Pacific ," the spokesperson added.
The Nimitz - America's oldest active aircraft carrier - left Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton, Washington on March 21 for what the US Navy called a "routine deployment" to the Western Pacific .
"Operating forward as a strike group enhances our ability to maintain a stable and ready force at sea, with a broad range of military capabilities to respond to any crisis or contingency," said Vice Admiral Maximilian Clark, commander of the Nimitz carrier strike group.
