A young man in China has been detained after showing off a cash gift worth more than $25 million (180 million yuan) from his grandmother on his birthday, but was later found to have made up the whole story.
On October 5, the man was spotted showing off luxury cars, jewelry, and antiques on his Douyin account @dongdonganan. He also commented on another user's post, claiming that his grandmother gave him 180 million yuan on his 20th birthday.
Amid public skepticism, he posted a screenshot of his bank account, which showed savings of 2.4 billion yuan ($335 million).
He also shared an appointment letter for a senior family member said to have been issued by China's State Council and an old group photo of People's Liberation Army officials, implying that a relative held a prestigious position.
On October 31, cyber police in Guizhou Province, Southwest China, revealed that a man surnamed Tian had faked property images and edited photos to attract followers and profit from online gambling.
Authorities said he was arrested for disturbing public order and violating cyberspace regulations, as well as engaging in online gambling.
