Build a coffee guardhouse

In the context of skyrocketing coffee prices, Dak Lak coffee farmers are not only happy with the opportunity to increase their income and improve their lives, but also face the fear of agricultural product theft. Many households have proactively sought creative solutions to protect their family assets.

On coffee plantations, solid fences and corrugated iron fences surrounding the land have become more common than ever.

These barriers not only help prevent intruders from stealing coffee, but also limit visibility from the outside, ensuring crop safety.

After each harvest, many households also invest in building warehouses to preserve coffee, ensuring that the product is always safe.

In addition, many families also build solid huts on the fields to facilitate guarding the coffee, especially at night.

Ms. Huynh Thi Thao, residing in Ea Ning commune, Cu Kuin district, Dak Lak province, said: “My family has 5 sao of coffee intercropped with pepper and durian. In previous years, we would often go to the fields to pick coffee during harvest season. But this year, coffee prices are at a record high, and the risk of theft is hidden and increasing.”

People build huts on coffee plantations to conveniently guard and prevent bad guys from stealing coffee when coffee prices increase.

To cope with this situation, Ms. Thao's family and many local people have built sturdy, higher huts.

These huts not only help people easily monitor the surrounding area of the plantation, but also create a sense of security for their family's property. At the same time, her family also assigns people to be present on the coffee plantation regularly to prevent intruders.

Install cameras to watch for thieves in the fields

One of the prominent measures that farmers are spreading the word about is installing security camera systems. This solution allows farmers to easily monitor their fields, especially during harvest season.

Mr. Huynh Van Phuoc, a farmer in Quang Tien commune, Cu Mgar district (Dak Lak province), shared: “My family has 4 hectares of land for growing perennial crops.

Because of the large area, I cannot be present on the farm all the time, so I have to face theft. Many times, when I was at the beginning of the plot, thieves broke into the end of the plot to steal agricultural products and production machinery.

Police officers in Dak Lak propagate and mobilize people to proactively take measures to protect their property when coffee prices are rising.

Security cameras are present in many places on coffee growing areas in communes in Dak Lak province.

In 2015, after being visited by thieves many times, Mr. Phuoc decided to invest more than 700 million VND to build a fence around the field. However, the theft still occurred. "Many people still jumped over the fence to break into my family's field and steal property," said Mr. Phuoc.

To enhance protection, Mr. Phuoc installed a camera system on his farm three years ago. “No matter where I am, I can monitor all activities on the farm, including the workers, via my phone or computer.

Even at night, I can sleep with peace of mind and easily observe unusual signs through the camera without having to wade out into the field like before. The presence of the camera makes potential thieves wary,” Mr. Phuoc confided.

In Tien Cuong village, Quang Tien commune, Cu Mgar district, Mr. Tran Ngoc Dung's family has also installed a camera system to protect 3 hectares of coffee and durian.

Mr. Dung shared: “In the past, my family often encountered bad guys entering the farm to steal fresh coffee. However, since installing cameras, the theft has decreased significantly. We can easily monitor everyone entering and leaving the farm.”

Mr. Than Tuan, an officer in charge of agriculture in Quang Tien commune, said: "The commune has about 2,178 hectares of agricultural land, of which 1,292 hectares is coffee land.

Coffee output in 2023 is estimated at about 2,000 tons. The installation of security cameras has helped hundreds of households in the area monitor the growth of crops, promptly detect strangers entering the fields, thereby protecting property more effectively.

A household in Ea Tul commune, Cu Mgar district, Dak Lak province installed a camera to protect crops.

Since July 2024, the family of Mr. Y Han Nie, residing in Tu village, Ea Tul commune, Cu Mgar district (Dak Lak province) has also installed cameras to manage and monitor 2 hectares of coffee intercropped with durian, avocado, and pepper.

“Because the field is nearly 1km away from home, we cannot be there regularly. Every day, many people pass by the field and many times there are petty thefts without identifying the culprit. Therefore, my family decided to install cameras to conveniently monitor people entering and leaving the field every day,” Mr. Y Han emphasized.

Mr. Le Quang Bat, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ea Tul Commune, Cu Mgar District, informed that currently, all 11 villages and hamlets of Ea Tul Commune have been equipped with security camera systems along the roads. In particular, the central area of the commune has also invested in installing 12 security cameras, improving the safety level for people during the coffee crop season.

A resident of Quang Tien commune talks about the benefits of installing cameras.

According to the report of Dak Lak Provincial Statistics Office, in 2023, the whole province will have a total of 212,106 hectares of coffee. Of which, the existing area is 212,106 hectares; newly planted area is 4,765 hectares; product area is 200,346 hectares; harvested output is 535,672 tons.
