Recently, supply chain activity revealed that Apple is drastically adjusting its iPhone Air production plans after the device's sales fell short of expectations. While overall iPhone 17 production remains stable at around 85-90 million units, the slimmer iPhone model has been cut back "near to the point of complete discontinuation."
According to analysts from Mizuho Securities, Apple will reduce the production of the iPhone Air by approximately 1 million units this year, while increasing production targets for the standard and Pro models of the iPhone 17. Specifically, the basic iPhone 17 model will see an increase of about 2 million units, the iPhone 17 Pro by about 1 million, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max by about 4 million units.
The report states that the iPhone Air was initially predicted to account for around 10-15% of total orders for the iPhone 17 series. However, from November onwards, the actual volume will be "significantly reduced."
One of the reasons cited by tech websites is that the iPhone Air, while very thin and lightweight, suffers from shorter battery life and only has a single camera compared to the Pro models. This has limited its appeal to users in fiercely competitive markets.
Conversely, the iPhone 17 line as a whole had a very impressive start. Data from the US and Chinese markets shows that the new iPhone line surpassed its predecessor by about 14% in the first 10 days of its launch, with the standard model increasing by about 31% compared to the iPhone 16, and the Pro/Pro Max models increasing by about 12%.
Apple's shift in focus to the standard and Pro iPhone 17 models instead of continuing to invest heavily in the iPhone Air is a strategic move. In this, the tech giant maintains its most attractive and high-margin product line instead of keeping a weaker-selling sub-model.
However, Apple has yet to make an official statement confirming the discontinuation of the iPhone Air. This information comes solely from analytical sources and the supply chain.
