Dong Yen Bridge on National Highway 18, Noi Bai - Bac Ninh section opens to traffic

Mr. Nguyen Hong Phong, Deputy Director of Tin Thinh Investment and Construction Joint Stock Company - the unit constructing and repairing Dong Yen bridge, said that after nearly 2 months of continuous construction with "3 shifts, 4 teams", the unit completed the last layer of asphalt concrete on July 10.

Dong Yen Bridge officially opened to traffic on July 11.

“After completing the road markings, on July 11, Dong Yen Bridge officially opened to traffic. During the past 2 months, the rainy weather has significantly affected the progress, so we had to urge the workers to work day and night to complete the project on time," Mr. Phong added.

Mr. Tran Manh Cuong, Deputy Head of Traffic Infrastructure Management Department (Department of Construction of Bac Ninh province) said that National Highway 18, Noi Bai - Bac Ninh section, is a vital route, with a traffic volume of 60,000 vehicles/day and night, so the unit has urged the contractor to urgently complete the construction to serve the traveling public.

"The opening of Dong Yen bridge after the repair process brings convenience to people's travel, vehicles do not have to go through the bypass to Yen Phong industrial park, thereby reducing pressure on provincial road 286," said Mr. Cuong.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh (residing in Bac Ninh city), a driver of a car service that transports passengers to Noi Bai airport, shared that for nearly 2 months, due to the repair of Dong Yen bridge, he had to take the bypass road through Yen Phong industrial park (provincial road 286), making the distance longer, reducing travel speed, and taking more time.

It took another 15-20 minutes to go through the bypass, but now that Dong Yen Bridge is open, we no longer have to go through the bypass to Noi Bai airport. Drivers are very excited because there is no more traffic jam,” Tinh shared.

Previously, Provincial Road 286 was a detour for vehicles when Dong Yen Bridge was under repair, so traffic jams often occurred and drivers spent a lot of time passing through here.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Sen (living on Provincial Road 286) said that Dong Yen Bridge allows vehicles to pass through, and the number of vehicles passing through Provincial Road 286 has decreased significantly.

“For the past two months, during morning and afternoon rush hours, the road in front of my house has been congested, which has had a significant impact on my life and business. But today, Dong Yen Bridge is open, so vehicles on National Highway 18 do not have to go here, so Provincial Road 286 has significantly reduced traffic and there are no more traffic jams,” said Ms. Sen.

The Dong Yen Bridge repair project on Highway 18 is worth more than 3 billion VND, including the following items: repairing span 6 of the left-side unit; repairing the bridge deck of span 11 of the left-side unit: chiseling out the damaged reinforced concrete bridge deck; damaged expansion joints; covering the bridge deck with 7 cm thick asphalt concrete.

National Highway 18, Noi Bai - Bac Ninh section, was invested in construction since 2004 according to expressway standards, and is currently operating at a speed of 80 km/h due to the lack of investment in some items such as: Traffic safety system (corrugated iron railings in the median strip, protective fences on both sides of the road, etc.), operating with motorbikes.

National Highway 18 is 324 km long, passing through Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong and Quang Ninh. The Noi Bai - Bac Ninh section is about 30 km long. This is a vital route, connecting important highways in the Northern region such as Noi Bai - Lao Cai, Hanoi - Thai Nguyen, Hanoi - Bac Ninh, as well as National Highways 1, National Highway 3 and major urban traffic axes in the Hanoi capital region such as Vo Van Kiet Street and Vo Nguyen Giap Street.
