The GMS cooperation program was established in 1992 at the initiative of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), including six members: Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and two autonomous provinces of China (Guangxi and Yunnan).
GMS members have approved major cooperation projects for each region and economic corridor, such as the North-South Economic Corridor (NSEC), East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC), Southern Economic Corridor (SEC)... and proposed ten priority areas of cooperation.
Including: transportation, energy, environment, tourism, post and telecommunications, trade, investment, human resource development, agriculture and rural development, urban development along economic corridors.
Infrastructure connectivity is a top priority and in fact the most prominent area, with the most important achievements under the GMS framework over the past two decades.
The conference approved the Sub-regional Investment Framework until 2022 with a list of more than 222 specific projects, worth about 65 billion USD.
Along with that is the Hanoi Action Plan 2018 - 2022 and a number of documents orienting key areas, including promoting the expansion of the current economic corridor network.
The 7th GMS Conference was held online in 2021, with the theme "GMS: Regaining strength to cope with challenges in the new decade", Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also delivered a speech at this conference.
The Ayeyawady – Chao Phraya – Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy Summit (ACMECS) is also known as the Economic Cooperation Strategy (ECS).
This is an economic cooperation framework comprising five countries: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam with the overarching goal of ensuring peace, stability and common prosperity.
The main objective of ACMECS is to enhance competitiveness and promote economic growth in border areas of countries, promote cooperation in agricultural and industrial development in the most effective way, expand employment opportunities and narrow the income gap between countries.
Meanwhile, the 10th Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam (CLMV) Summit took place in 2020 with the theme "Enhancing effective connectivity for regional integration"./.
