Large-scale livestock farms that apply biogas technology say they only use about 20-30% of the electricity from biogas, the rest is wasted, with no place to sell...

According to the Department of Animal Husbandry (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the scale of animal husbandry in our country is increasingly large. Currently, the total herd of pigs has reached approximately 30 million, poultry has reached over 500 million and cattle has reached over 12 million, the need to convert to a circular economy is also very large and this will be an inevitable trend.

Pig farming creates a large source of by-products.

However, at the Circular Economy Forum in the Livestock Industry, organized by the Steering Committee of the 970 Connection Forum (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) and the Agricultural Business Advisory Group of the Australian Center for International Agricultural Research in Vietnam (ACIAR) on March 21 (online connection in Hanoi), Dr. Nguyen The Hinh, Deputy Head of the Agricultural Project Management Board, said that recently, the Low Carbon Agriculture Support Project (LCASP) has built models in 10 provinces with quite positive results.

Accordingly, large farms all achieve a profit margin of over 20%, with a payback period of about 5-6 years (pig farms with a scale of over 5,000 pigs achieve a profit margin of 60%, with a payback period of only 2-3 years). Not only do they produce a huge amount of food, but large-scale livestock farms, thanks to the application of biogas technology, have been producing a huge amount of electricity from livestock by-products.

However, the difficulty is that the Government has not yet allowed the connection of biogas electricity to the national grid, so the produced domestic electricity is not consumed (most livestock farms only use about 20-30% of the biogas electricity produced).

Therefore, at the forum, Dr. Nguyen The Hinh proposed that the Government allow the connection of biogas power grid to create an output market for biogas electricity, and at the same time have policies to encourage the development, production and commercialization of domestic biogas generators.

Biogas generator

According to Mr. Le Thanh Tung, Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production in charge of the Southern region, the livestock industry generates hundreds of millions of tons of waste per year (including solid waste, liquid waste, and air waste) with the goal of ensuring no environmental pollution, no greenhouse gas effect, and reuse in the circular chain in organic agricultural production, bringing economic efficiency.

The leader of the Department of Crop Production said that the recommendations and contributions of production and livestock units at this forum will be collected and sent to management agencies to adjust management policies and guidelines accordingly.
