Visiting Tien Yen in early spring, locals and tourists alike will have the opportunity to experience many interesting things at festivals and folk games that reflect the unique identity of this locality, which is home to a large ethnic minority population.
Tien Yen is a land with a long and rich cultural heritage, home to 13 ethnic groups such as the Kinh, Dao, Tay, San Diu, San Chi, Hoa, Thai, and Cao Lan, resulting in a diverse and unique cultural and artistic landscape.
Notably, on February 8th and 9th, visitors and locals will have the opportunity to experience the Tay ethnic group's cultural and sports festival in Tien Yen district and the Dong Dinh communal house festival in 2025. Here, people and tourists will learn more about the culture of the Tay ethnic group and participate in cultural and sporting activities such as stick pushing, tug-of-war, crossbow shooting, throwing the ball, men's and women's volleyball competitions, and men's raft racing on the Dong Dinh river...
Alongside this, there will be cultural exchanges including singing Then songs, playing the Tinh lute, a traditional Tay ethnic costume performance, bamboo pole dancing, and a bonfire with the Tay ethnic community of Binh Lieu district. In addition, visitors will witness a reenactment of the "Long Tong Ceremony" at the festival. Throughout the festival, visitors can enjoy local specialties at OCOP (One Commune One Product) stalls, food stalls , and exhibition spaces showcasing Tay ethnic culture.
Besides the Dong Dinh Temple Festival, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the 2025 Dao Ethnic Culture and Sports Festival, coinciding with the opening of the Ha Lau Highland Cultural Market in early April. This festival showcases the unique customs and traditions of the Dao ethnic community in Tien Yen district. At the festival, visitors can witness reenactments of the Dao people's coming-of-age ceremony and wedding procession.
Notably, visitors can rent traditional ethnic costumes to take photos at Ha Lau Market, Bac Lu Suspension Bridge (Bac Lu village), Khe Lieng Suspension Bridge (Co Muoi - Khe Lieng village), the flower palace in Bac Lu village, and participate in games like blindfolded chicken catching, blindfolded pot smashing; and raft racing on Pho Cu River (Ha Lau commune). They can also watch cultural exchange performances characteristic of the Dao people and participate in sports such as tug-of-war, stick pushing, men's and women's crossbow shooting, men's and women's stilt walking, women's football matches, Dao ethnic costume shows, and bamboo pole dancing…
Visiting the highland communes of Tien Yen district in the early spring, tourists will also have the opportunity to experience many cultural activities in the communes and towns, from traditional sports such as tug-of-war, stick pushing, spinning tops, crossbow shooting, chess, human chess... to modern sports such as football and table tennis... Especially in some highland communes such as Ha Lau, Phong Du, and Dai Duc, there are also activities that reflect the traditional cultural identity of ethnic minorities such as Soong Co singing, Then singing... and you can watch exciting football matches of local girls.
In recent years, Tien Yen has done a good job of managing festivals, restoring traditional festivals, and actively preserving the invaluable values and assets of the community by implementing many projects to preserve the cultural identity of ethnic groups in conjunction with tourism development. Festivals have become an indispensable part of the cultural and spiritual life of the people here, especially during the Lunar New Year, and have become familiar to many tourists from all over. This helps people and tourists learn more about the history, customs, and traditional values of ethnic minorities, contributing to strengthening solidarity among ethnic groups in the district in particular and in Quang Ninh province in general.
