Math Legend Retires
Sharing with VietNamNet , mathematics doctor Tran Nam Dung, Vice Principal of the Gifted High School, said that mathematics doctor Le Ba Khanh Trinh officially retired after nearly 40 years in the profession.
Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh was born in 1962 in Hue , known by the nickname "golden boy of Vietnamese mathematics".
At the 1979 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in England, he won a Gold Medal with a perfect score of 40/40, and also won a special prize with a unique solution. To date, he is the only Vietnamese student to win a special prize in an international Math competition.
After that, he studied at the Faculty of Mathematics - Moscow State University (Russia). He was guided by Professor, Academician Andrey Aleksandrovich Gonchar - Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union to write his graduation thesis and doctoral thesis.
“Mr. Trinh was my idol at first. Back then, I studied in a village school but I always dreamed of being like Mr. Hoang Le Minh, Le Ba Khanh Trinh, and Le Tu Quoc Thang. I never expected that in 1984, I would study in the same department as him and we have been together ever since,” Dr. Tran Nam Dung shared. about my brother, my respected colleague.

In his memory, Dr. Tran Nam Dung remembers that when he was at the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics - Moscow State University, he and Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh were "a perfect pair". "Mr. Trinh played the guitar very well and I had a strong singing voice. In the football team, Mr. Trinh was the goalkeeper and I was the striker. Mr. Trinh was good at swimming, good at sports , good at playing musical instruments... in general, he was the dream of every girl. He was the one who played a decisive role in my path and invited me to come to Moscow State University", Dr. Dung said.
According to Dr. Tran Nam Dung, after graduating and returning to Vietnam, he and Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh worked together very well. “He could refuse others but never refused Nam Dung. I still remember in 1996, when I had just finished grading university entrance exams, my colleagues invited me to go drinking. Because I had just returned, they all got me drunk. Seeing me starting to stagger, Mr. Trinh stood up and said: Dung is my younger brother, now whoever wants to drink with Dung, drink with me. Mr. Trinh is very moderate, he rarely drinks but is still ready when needed,” Mr. Dung said.
Dr. Trinh's friends later became friends of Dr. Tran Nam Dung.
The Vice Principal of the Gifted High School said that although Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh did not hold a high position (his highest position was deputy head of the department), he made great contributions to the education cause. Also retiring this time with Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh is Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Head of the IT Department. "Mr. Trinh and Mr. Thanh Hung are legends of the Gifted High School. The Gifted High School is grateful to these two excellent and respected teachers," according to Dr. Dung.
Retirement is just a decision, maybe I'll be more "lively" after that
After graduating with a doctorate from Moscow State University, Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh returned to Vietnam to pursue a career in research and teaching at the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technology, University of Natural Sciences and High School for the Gifted (Ho Chi Minh City National University). For many years, Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh has been the leader and trainer of the Vietnamese student team participating in the International Mathematical Olympiad.

At the Gifted High School, Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh has been the Head of the Math Group for 32 years (from 1993 to present). Under his leadership, the school's Math team has won hundreds of national and international awards. According to regulations, Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh will retire in 2022, but the school invited him to continue as the Head of the Math Group. He resigned from this position at the beginning of the year and has now officially retired.
Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh said he accepted retirement with a normal mindset, without regrets, because for him the important thing is whether he cares about his work or not and whether he is truly useful.
“Retirement is nothing special for me, except that I will have more free time. I don’t stop working, so it feels normal. Retirement is just an administrative decision and I may be more ‘lively’ than before,” he said.
According to him, his post-retirement work will not depend on him but on many things around him. If the job needs him, the schools need him, he is always ready. How he did before is still the same, still teaching the national team, doing professional work, even with higher requirements and better quality.
“Now that I have more time, I think the quality requirements will be even higher and more complete. So for me, retirement is just a milestone decision, while the work and thoughts continue. Certainly, the trust of the school and the units will remain the same.”
Dr. Khanh Trinh said that in the past, he had to teach almost all year round. He taught the national team, trained students at gifted schools, and taught. Now he will have time to focus on this work. But if he uses the old things to teach, he will definitely lose inspiration, so he will develop more on his own. "Now that I am more comfortable, less busy, and have more time, I have to make up for it with depth," Dr. Trinh confided.
