Bloomberg news agency on July 22 quoted sources saying that the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NSA) had become the target of a series of hacker attacks targeting Microsoft's SharePoint document management software.
According to Bloomberg, although the NSA's system was compromised, no classified data or sensitive information was stolen.
The NSA is part of the US Department of Energy and is responsible for designing and maintaining the country's nuclear arsenal.
The Department of Energy, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and Microsoft have yet to make official comments.
Attacks were also reported in Germany and several other European countries, primarily targeting organizations that use SharePoint to share internal documents and support teamwork. Sectors affected include government, defense industry, banking, and healthcare .
According to security experts, these attacks are part of a campaign called "ToolShell", allowing hackers to take complete control of the system, install backdoors for long-term access, and even extend to connected services such as Microsoft Teams and OneDrive.
