On October 27, Con Dao National Park (Con Dao special zone, Ho Chi Minh City) successfully hatched and released 14 extremely rare albino turtles into the sea.
Notably, all 14 albino turtles above belong to a nest of 78 sea turtle eggs at Hon Cau (Con Dao).
Unlike regular sea turtles, albino turtles have bright ivory shells, frosty white borders and clear pink eyes.
According to Con Dao National Park, albinism is an extremely rare genetic mutation, with only about 1/100,000 to 1/150,000 sea turtles having this trait.
During the conservation process, Con Dao National Park still records 3-4 albino turtle nests every year.
However, most of them often have congenital defects such as no eyes or amputated swimming, with only slightly pink eyes.
"This is the first time conservation staff have witnessed an albino turtle with such clear and flexible red eyes - a rare and touching image," said the Con Dao National Park Management Board.

Although most of the newly hatched albino turtles are healthy, their survival journey is much more difficult than that of regular baby sea turtles.
In addition to threats from birds and large fish, they also face human-caused threats such as pollution, unsustainable fishing, and habitat degradation.
On the other hand, with their distinctive white shells, they are easy prey for predators. Therefore, the rate of adult albino turtles is extremely sparse.
Releasing more than 120,000 baby sea turtles into the wild
According to Con Dao National Park, rescue forces have relocated thousands of nests, successfully hatched and released more than 120,000 healthy baby turtles back into the sea.
Specifically, up to now, nearly 1,800 turtle egg nests have been safely moved to incubation lakes by rescue forces. Of these, about 1,500 turtle egg nests have successfully hatched.
Authorities, volunteers and tourists have released about 120,000 healthy baby sea turtles back into the wild. About 300 remaining nests are expected to hatch gradually between now and the end of December.
It is expected that in 2025, there will be about 600 mother sea turtles coming to the sandbanks of Con Dao to nest and lay eggs. The hatching success rate is about 87%.
Sea turtle breeding season lasts from April to November every year and peaks from June to October. In Con Dao, mother turtles come to the beach to lay eggs, mainly green turtles (also known as green turtles).
