According to a VNA reporter in Bangkok, Thailand has signaled a major step forward in the fight against transnational organized crime by signing the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime ( Hanoi Convention) at the signing ceremony and the Hanoi Convention High-Level Conference held on October 25-26.

Representing Thailand at the conference, Minister of Digital Economy and Society (DES) Chaichanok Chidchob affirmed that this convention aims to enhance international cooperation, facilitate intelligence sharing and enhance technical capacity to effectively combat cybercrime, especially for the benefit of developing countries.

In his speech at the conference, Mr. Chaichanok emphasized the seriousness of the online fraud that is raging in Thailand, and affirmed that Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul considered this issue a “National Agenda” that needs to be thoroughly resolved.

According to Minister Chaichanok, the Thai Government is implementing a three-pronged proactive strategy to address the problem.

First is cutting off border signals: Take strong measures to cut off mobile and internet signals along the border and detect illegal connections to prevent illegal communications from leaking out of Thailand.

Second is real-time data integration: Develop an integrated, real-time central database to quickly track perpetrators' financial trails and so-called "ghost accounts," and expedite compensation to victims.

And third is legal review and strict punishment: Speed up the revision of the country's technology crime law to focus on “prevention, suppression and response” including the establishment of a dedicated task force within the next two months.

The Thai representative stressed that the new legal framework will require the application of stricter penalties and strong legal action against anyone involved - including politicians, civil servants or state employees - found to be colluding with call centers or online gambling lines./.
