According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Bangkok, Thailand has signaled a major step forward in the fight against transnational organized crime by signing the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime ( Hanoi Convention) at the signing ceremony and high-level conference of the Hanoi Convention held over two days, October 25-26.

Representing Thailand at the conference, Minister of Digital Economy and Society (DES) Chaichanok Chidchob affirmed that this convention aims to strengthen international cooperation, facilitate the sharing of intelligence information, and enhance technical capabilities to effectively combat cybercrime, especially for the benefit of developing countries.

In his speech at the conference, Mr. Chaichanok emphasized the seriousness of the rampant online fraud in Thailand, and affirmed that Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul considers this issue a "national agenda" that needs to be thoroughly addressed.

According to Minister Chaichanok, the Thai government is implementing a proactive three-pronged strategy to address the issue.

First, cut off border signals: Implement strong measures to cut off mobile and internet signals along the border and detect illegal connections to prevent illicit communications from leaking out of Thailand.

Secondly, it involves integrating real-time data: Developing a central, integrated, real-time database to quickly track the financial footprints of perpetrators and so-called "ghost accounts," while also expediting compensation for victims.

And third, legal review and stricter penalties: Accelerate the revision of the country's cybercrime laws to focus on "prevention, suppression, and response," including the establishment of a dedicated special task force within the next two months.

The Thai representative emphasized that the new legal framework will require the application of stricter penalties and decisive legal action against anyone found to be involved – including politicians, public officials, or government employees – in colluding with call centers or online gambling rings.
