“The court has ordered the arrest of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her trial on November 18, 2024,” Mohammad Tajul Islam, chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in Bangladesh, said in a statement.

The protests that toppled Prime Minister Hasina were sparked by a system of preferential public sector job quotas for families who fought in the 1971 independence war.

Prime Minister Hasina's flight from the country ended her 15-year rule in Bangladesh. The country of 170 million people is also facing economic hardship, while Ms. Hasina herself has been accused of authoritarianism by political opponents. She is currently in a suburb of New Delhi, India.
