According to Business Standard, on October 17, a Bangladeshi court ordered the arrest of former exiled leader Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country to India in August, after she was ousted due to domestic protests.

“The court has issued an arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and will produce her before the court on November 18, 2024,” Mohammad Tajul Islam, chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in Bangladesh, said in a statement.

The protests that toppled Prime Minister Hasina were sparked by a system of preferential public sector job quotas for families who fought in the 1971 independence war.

Prime Minister Hasina's flight abroad ended her 15-year rule in Bangladesh. The country of 170 million people is also facing economic hardship, while Hasina herself has been accused of authoritarianism by political opponents. She is currently in a suburb of New Delhi, India.
