(CLO) The US Supreme Court has agreed to accept TikTok's appeal to prevent an impending ban on the video -sharing platform in the US.
Senior justices signaled on Wednesday that they were open to reviewing a lower court's decision to uphold the ban, but stopped short of immediately issuing an injunction halting the US government's efforts to block TikTok.
The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case on January 10, nine days before the US government is due to impose a formal ban on TikTok.

US President Joe Biden signed into law the Foreign Adversaries Control App Act in April after years of concerns that the popular social media app could be used to steal Americans' data and manipulate public opinion.
The focus of the case is on whether the TikTok ban violates the free speech rights granted by the First Amendment of the US Constitution. The US government argues that the ban falls within the legal regulations imposed on foreign companies.
TikTok, which has 170 million monthly users in the US, called the law in a filing to the Supreme Court "a massive and unprecedented restriction on speech".
"This bill would shut down one of America's most popular speech platforms the day before the inauguration of the President," TikTok's lawyer wrote, referring to President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20.
On Monday, Mr. Trump met with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, then sent a positive signal to the social network owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.
Specifically, during the press conference, Mr. Trump said his administration would "look into TikTok." He said: "I have a warm place in my heart for TikTok, because I won the youth category by 34 points" in the recent 2024 US election.
