On November 2, US President Donald Trump said that Blackwell chips - Nvidia's latest generation of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) chips - will not be provided to "others", hinting at the possibility of tightening the export of this strategic technology abroad.
Nvidia, currently the world's largest company by market capitalization, dominates the global AI chip market.
Mr Trump's announcement comes amid speculation about whether the US government will allow the export of a version of the Blackwell chip to China.
Since August, Mr. Trump has suggested that a performance-reduced version of this new generation GPU could be allowed to be sold in China.
However, his latest statement suggests that the US may restrict the supply of this chip abroad.
Speaking on Air Force One while returning to Washington after a weekend in Florida, Mr. Trump emphasized: “The new Blackwell chip is about 10 years ahead of everything else.” However, he made it clear: “We (the US) will not give that chip to someone else.”
The possibility of Blackwell chips being sold to Chinese companies has drawn criticism from politicians with a hard line on Beijing. Mr. Trump had previously suggested that he would discuss AI chips with Chinese President Xi Jinping before their summit in South Korea last week, but later confirmed that the topic “was not raised.”
As for Nvidia, CEO Jensen Huang said last week that the company has not applied for a license to export chips to China, because “Beijing has made it clear that they do not want Nvidia there.”
He also stressed that the Chinese market remains important to sustaining research and development activities in the US.
On October 30, Nvidia announced that it will supply more than 260,000 Blackwell AI chips to South Korea and several large corporations in the country, including Samsung Electronics./.
