Project overview 10,400 billion VND

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has agreed on a detailed plan to implement the project to upgrade and expand National Highway 22, from An Suong intersection to Ring Road 3. The project is about 9.1 km long, with a total estimated investment of VND10,424 billion. According to the plan, the project will be implemented under the public-private partnership (BOT contract) method and is expected to start construction in 2026.

Detailed planning and technical design

According to the approved plan, after upgrading, National Highway 22 will have a cross-section width of 60 meters, expanded to 10 lanes. The lane structure is clearly divided to optimize traffic flow and enhance safety.

  • 4 center lanes: Reserved for cars with a maximum speed of 80 km/h.
  • 6 lanes on both sides: For mixed traffic with a speed limit of 60 km/h.

This design aims to separate traffic streams of different speeds, minimizing conflicts and the risk of accidents.

Building 7 overpasses at key intersections

An important part of the project is the construction of 7 overpasses at major intersections that are frequently congested. The planned locations include:

  • Nguyen Anh Thu
  • Nguyen Thi Soc - Square House
  • Le Thi Ha
  • Tran Van Muoi - Ba Trieu
  • Ly Thuong Kiet - Nguyen Van Bua
  • Nguyen Thi Nuoi
  • Duong Cong Khi - Le Loi

The construction of these overpasses is expected to create a continuous traffic network, eliminating at-grade intersections that cause traffic conflicts.

Strategic role and infrastructure connectivity

The National Highway 22 upgrade project not only solves the problem of traffic congestion and traffic accidents at the Northwest gateway of the city but also plays a key role in connecting the regional infrastructure. Once completed, the route will create a synchronous connection with other strategic traffic axes such as Ring Road 3, Ring Road 4 and the Ho Chi Minh City - Moc Bai Expressway in the future.

Implementation plan and direction

To ensure progress, Ho Chi Minh City leaders have directed relevant departments, branches and localities to concentrate resources and closely coordinate in investment preparation and site clearance. The Department of Construction is assigned to act as the focal point, urge and summarize the implementation situation, and promptly report any arising problems to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for consideration and direction.

Background of other gateway infrastructure projects

In parallel with the National Highway 22 project, Ho Chi Minh City is also promoting the plan to upgrade and expand National Highway 13 (from Binh Trieu Bridge to the border of Binh Duong province) under the BOT form. This project has a total investment of about 21,724 billion VND, expected to start construction in the fourth quarter of 2026 and be completed in 2028, contributing to solving the serious traffic jam situation at the Northeast gateway.
