After Tet, the cold air lasts for a long time, the rate of flu and some respiratory diseases such as measles increases. Along with common signs in the respiratory tract such as: cough, runny nose, stuffy nose, rash... many children with flu and measles have eye diseases. Some cases of eye disease progress severely, causing vision loss.

A typical case is the boy LNM (4 years old, Hanoi ) who showed signs of dry cough, runny nose, mild fever, watery eyes, and a lot of eye discharge. The family treated the child at home. After 1 week of eye drops with saline and eye drops but did not improve, the child was taken to the doctor. At the hospital, the doctor determined that the child's two eyelids were swollen, had a thick, sticky pseudomembrane, and corneal epithelial abrasion complications. If not treated promptly, it could become infected and affect vision.

After being diagnosed, the patient was prescribed treatment according to the regimen and closely monitored. Luckily, baby M recovered completely after 1 week.

According to MSc. Dr. Luong Thi Anh Thu, Tam Anh Technology Eye Center, some respiratory infectious diseases such as flu and measles can cause eye diseases such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, conjunctival hemorrhage, etc. Eye symptoms such as watery eyes, glare; itchy, gritty feeling in the eyes; lots of thick mucus in the eyes; dry eyes, tired eyes, reduced vision, etc.

The cause of eye symptoms when having flu or measles may be due to the habit of covering the mouth with bare hands, then rubbing the eyes, causing viruses and bacteria to spread and cause eye disease.

"Most parents often pay attention to respiratory symptoms such as cough, runny nose, stuffy nose... but do not pay attention to eye symptoms, making the disease more severe," said Dr. Anh Thu.

According to Dr. Thu's recommendation, keratitis, conjunctivitis or corneal hemorrhage are not difficult to treat. However, many families have the habit of self-medicating, using eye drops or ointments without medical prescription, which can cause the disease to not be treated properly or to worsen, affecting vision. When there are abnormal signs in the eyes, parents should take their children to see a doctor early to assess the condition and prescribe appropriate treatment.
