The journey of 'racing against time' to establish Tu Du Hospital, branch 2, to serve the people of Can Gio

Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai, Director of Tu Du Hospital, has just taken on the additional role of Director of Tu Du Hospital, branch 2 in Can Gio (HCMC). At the decision-receiving ceremony, he shared the journey of forming a model of a general hospital at the end of the line in the typical coastal area of ​​HCMC.

According to Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai, during 12 months of preparation, Tu Du Hospital and related units "raced against time" to turn the policy of the City Party Committee - People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City into reality.

"We are just the executors. Success belongs to the leaders who created the fastest and most complete legal corridor," he emphasized.

At the ceremony, the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health presented the appointment decision in the presence of representatives of the City Party Committee and 8 end-line hospitals participating in the model.

Project of convergence of "heavenly time - favorable location - harmony of people"

The Director of Tu Du Hospital said that the establishment of the second facility is the result of the convergence of favorable time, favorable location, and favorable people.

Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai received the additional role of Director of Tu Du Hospital, Branch 2, from the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, witnessed by the leaders of the City Party Committee and 8 leaders of the end-line hospitals.

In particular, the right time is a timely policy, quickly approved by the Government , the City Party Committee and the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City; legal procedures, especially the linkage mechanism between Tu Du and the City's 8 end-line hospitals, were completed in just 10 days.

The geographical advantage is that Can Gio has a strategic connection with Dong Nai, Long Thanh, Vung Tau and the whole route from the Mekong Delta. In the future, when the coastal road and bridge system is completed, this area will become a gateway for economic development - services - sea tourism.

According to Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai's analysis, the human factor is the strong support of the Department of Health, the commune government, departments and branches, and the consensus of local people.

"Without the coordination of all levels and hospitals, nearly a year is not enough time to turn the old facility into an operational hospital," he said.

Rush to rebuild to take care of people's health

Immediately after taking over the premises, Tu Du Hospital and 8 other end-line hospitals (Le Van Thinh, Dentistry, Ear-Nose-Throat, Eyes, Dermatology, Children's, Rehabilitation & Occupational Disease Treatment, Traditional Medicine) were mobilized almost full-time for renovation: Replacing the lighting system, completing the operating room, renovating the infrastructure, and installing equipment. All machinery and computers from the main facility were transferred down to be operational in time.

People in Can Gio are excited to be examined and enjoy high-tech medical services on the spot.

Some of the most modern equipment has also been brought to Can Gio, including an automatic ultrasound system that allows recording of all fetal movements, limiting omissions and connecting online consultation with Tu Du's center.

During three weeks of operating with the spirit of 0-dong medical examination and treatment, the number of visits increased continuously; many specialties increased 3-4 times compared to before the model conversion.

Notably, the rate of emergency transfers has dropped sharply, from 40 cases per day to only 3. Many cases of multiple trauma and emergency obstetrics are treated right at the facility. Professional activities linked with the main facility help diagnose faster and more accurately.

Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai assessed that this is a clear demonstration of the correctness of the model of a general hospital at the end of the line applying the "locality-based" method, meeting the health care needs of people and the workforce at large projects in the Can Gio area.

Modeling Ideas: From Question to Reality

In December 2024, when Director of the Department of Health Tang Chi Thuong asked: "Is it possible to implement the model of Tu Du Hospital, branch 2, in Can Gio?"

After a meeting with the hospital's Party Committee and all key staff, Dr. Hai boldly answered "absolutely possible".

As a group 1 autonomous specialized hospital, Tu Du has enough financial resources to implement the model without using the City budget.

To form a general hospital, 8 end-of-line hospitals in the city were mobilized to join and participate with Tu Du.

On December 2, 2025, Tu Du Hospital, branch 2 in Can Gio, officially began providing health insurance examination and treatment to serve people.
