Mr. Nguyen Van Sinh's family is one of the pioneers in raising cassava leaf silkworms in the plantation area. The model creates jobs for 5 workers with an income of about 8 million VND/person/month; each month yields 1 ton of silkworms and 20kg of silkworm eggs. Seeing the effectiveness of the model, his family has completely shifted from simple farming to a livelihood chain with higher added value.
Like Mr. Sinh’s family, many households in Dong Luong commune have switched to raising silkworms using cassava leaves, proving the effectiveness of this model as it brings in a significant increase in income. Silkworm farming also attracts local workers, contributing to improving the living standards of rural areas.
Silkworm farming brings a stable source of income to the people of Dong Luong commune.
The model of raising silkworms eating cassava leaves has many advantages because cassava leaves are easy to find and cheap; silkworms grow quickly, are rarely sick, and have a short life cycle, helping people harvest their batches after only about 15 - 20 days. When the silkworms are "ripe", people can separate them to collect eggs for breeding or raise cocoons for commercial purposes. Every 20 days from the time the eggs hatch, each package of silkworm eggs can produce dozens of kilograms of silkworms with an average selling price of 75 - 80 thousand VND/kg.
Currently, Dong Luong commune has more than 200 households raising commercial silkworms. The model of raising silkworms using cassava leaves not only creates income for farmers but also contributes to diversifying traditional agricultural production, helping people flexibly respond to market fluctuations. Economic efficiency is further affirmed when the initial investment capital is not high, suitable for the conditions of local farmers.
Faced with this potential, the Dong Luong commune government has had orientations to sustainably develop the cassava leaf silkworm farming profession. According to comrade Dieu Kim Thang - Secretary of the Dong Luong commune Party Committee: "We have determined that developing the cassava leaf silkworm farming model is a practical direction, suitable for the actual conditions in the locality. In the coming time, the commune will coordinate with functional agencies to organize technical training, support breeds, and build a chain of product consumption links. People will be encouraged to plan cassava areas suitable for specialized silkworm farming areas, and link with businesses to create stable output and increase sustainable income."
The future prospects of sericulture are to build specialized areas for growing high-quality cassava, organize consumption links, transfer modern farming techniques and promote links with cooperatives or businesses to expand the scale. With fast growth rate and short cycle time, the model can develop not only in Dong Luong but also spread to neighboring areas.
The silkworm raising profession using cassava leaves in Dong Luong commune has all the conditions to be easy to do, easy to succeed, economically effective and is facing the opportunity to make a breakthrough in the local agricultural development strategy. The pioneering households have proven that with only initiative, effort and proper support from the government, this profession can completely become a key economic sector, bringing high economic value, improving farmers' lives, preserving a traditional profession that has gone through many changes.
