According to the Global Times , the EU's tariffs of up to 38.1% on Chinese-made electric vehicles are expected to take effect on July 4.

Meanwhile, the 27-member bloc will also investigate alleged excessive and unfair subsidies for Chinese electric vehicle makers.

Beijing reiterated its call for the EU to cancel the tariff decision, expressing its readiness for negotiations.

The country does not want to be drawn into a tariff war, especially at a time when tariffs imposed under US President Donald Trump are still having an impact.

However, the world's second-largest economy has said it will take all measures to protect its businesses if a tariff war breaks out.

China and the EU have agreed to launch tariff negotiations following talks between European Commission (EC) Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao.

The Global Times quoted observers as saying that the most likely outcome of the negotiations is for the EU to cancel its decision to impose tariffs before July 4.

According to the newspaper, the EU's increasing protectionist policies will lead to countermeasures from China and escalating trade tensions will only cause damage to both sides.
