Singapore has launched a new Coastal and Flood Protection Institute (CFI Singapore) to find long-term solutions to protect the country from rising sea levels caused by climate change, which could inundate low-lying areas.

The research centre will apply its expertise and innovation to combat the existential threat posed by rising sea levels. Singapore has invested heavily in improving drainage systems and building flood defence infrastructure, including seawalls, tidal gates and revetments to protect against erosion. It also launched a S$5 billion ($3.66 billion) flood and coastal protection fund in 2020.

CFI Singapore is a joint initiative of the National Water Board of Singapore (PUB) and the National University of Singapore. It has undertaken research projects looking at new engineering possibilities such as flexible seawalls and nature-based solutions such as the use of mangroves or seagrass for coastal protection. Future land reclamation projects will also be designed to protect against sea encroachment.
