School removes mirrors from toilets because students are addicted to TikTok

The Alamance-Burlington school system (USA) has just decided to remove all mirrors in the toilets so that students have no reason to hide there to film TikTok. Previously, the school caught students hiding in the toilets to film TikTok many times. Some students were even caught going to the toilet up to 9 times a day because they were so addicted to filming TikTok.

Alamance-Burlington High School removed all mirrors from its bathrooms so students wouldn't have the opportunity to skip class and go into the bathroom to make TikTok videos.

According to Mr. Atkins, public relations officer for the Alamance-Burlington School System, these mirrors appear a lot in videos that high school students film and post on TikTok.

The school also implemented a digital card system for students to check in and out of class – allowing the school to track how long students spend outside of class.

Since the mirrors were removed, Mr Atkins said, students have been “going to the bathroom less and spending less time in it”. “We’re tryingto educate students that we all have mobile phones now, and you have to learn how to use them appropriately, know when to put them down ,” Mr Atkins said.

This decision of the school has met with some mixed opposition because it affects other "innocent" students who did not violate the rules.

According to the Pew Research Institute, 1 in 6 teens in the US say they use TikTok and YouTube "almost all the time". "TikTok addiction" is causing many students to lose focus in their studies every day. Many schools across the US are also trying to find effective ways to prevent students from becoming addicted or distracted by TikTok.

The school's decision comes just months after many US technology experts warned that Gen Z would become increasingly addicted and dependent on TikTok.
