The regulation is based on concerns about distraction, reduced social interaction and the long-term effects of device overuse in children.
This is part of a set of tightened screen management guidelines by Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE) to help students develop healthy digital habits early on. Currently, students are only allowed to use devices during formal school hours. However, the new rule will extend the restriction to supplementary and enrichment sessions.
According to the MOE, all personal devices will be required to be kept in lockers or school bags while students are at school. Smartwatches will also be restricted because their ability to text and access apps is distracting and reduces face-to-face interaction between students. The ministry said some schools have adopted the regulation and recorded positive results, including improved physical health, increased concentration and increased face-to-face communication during breaks.
In addition, the automatic lock time of personal learning devices will be adjusted to 10:30 p.m. to encourage students to sleep early and manage device usage time before bedtime.
