Crackdown on illegal gold mining during the closure of Bong Mieu gold mine

The construction of the Bong Mieu gold mine closure project is facing many difficulties.

Accordingly, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province requested the People's Committee of Phu Ninh district to direct the People's Committee of Tam Lanh commune to coordinate with functional departments and the Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board to organize a meeting with households whose trees have not yet handed over the site in the Ho Gan area (5 households left) and the tailings disposal area (5 households left) to urgently request the cutting down of trees and hand over the site for construction of the project to close the gold ore mineral mine at Bong Mieu gold mine. In case after October 30, 2023, households do not comply, forces will be organized to protect the construction.

In addition, the Provincial Police directed relevant Departments to coordinate with Phu Ninh District Police and Tam Lanh Commune Police to develop a plan and organize forces to sweep illegal gold mining sites in the Bong Mieu gold mine area, Tam Lanh Commune and block and control people and vehicles illegally mining gold from entering and leaving the areas: Ho Gan, tailings dump, and Kem mountain to support the Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board to deploy construction on schedule.

The Provincial People's Committee assigned the Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board and construction units to prepare detailed construction plans for each area, send them to the Provincial Police, Phu Ninh District People's Committee, Phu Ninh District Police, Tam Lanh Commune People's Committee to organize raids and coordinate, support to ensure security and order during the construction process; especially to ensure security and safety during the mine closure construction process in Nui Kem area.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment regularly monitors and updates the implementation status of the Bong Mieu Gold Mine Closure Project in Tam Lanh Commune, Phu Ninh District to report to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Vietnam Minerals Administration upon request.

Previously, in Official Dispatch No. 5551/UBND-KTN dated August 18, 2023, the Provincial People's Committee also assigned the Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Ninh district to direct the People's Committee of Tam Lanh commune to coordinate with the police force to maintain operations at established checkpoints, regularly organize patrols and controls, prevent subjects from transporting tools, machinery, and vehicles into illegal gold mining and processing areas, and resolutely handle violations and confiscate illegally mined minerals.

At the same time, coordinate with the Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board and related units to organize propaganda and widely announce the scope of the area and the implementation plan of the gold mine closure project in Bong Mieu.

Request people to urgently leave the project construction area to ensure safety, especially the Nui Kem mine area, and have measures to support and ensure security and order during the project implementation process.

At the end of September 2023, the People's Committee of Phu Ninh district established an interdisciplinary working group to monitor, direct, and handle difficulties to ensure the construction process of the gold mine closure project in Bong Mieu.

However, according to the leader of Tam Lanh Commune People's Committee, although inspection and suppression work has been strengthened, illegal mining and gold mining activities in Bong Mieu gold mine area are still complicated and have not been completely resolved.
