The whole family works to treat the father with cancer.

Just a few days after Pham Hoang Viet in Hat Lot town, Mai Son district (Son La) received the admission notice, his mother had to leave Son La for Bac Ninh . Mrs. Lo Thi Hai got a seasonal job in a candy factory.

“I have to go to work to earn more money for my children's school fees,” said Ms. Hai.

The salary of seasonal workers is more than 4 million VND, and they are not allowed to work overtime like workers with official contracts at the factory. Ms. Hai worked for more than a month and saved more than 3 million VND.

Mother Viet almost never has a day off. She does anything that is needed, from washing dishes, cleaning restaurants to clearing fields, weeding... The pay depends on the difficulty of the job. For light work, Ms. Hai is paid 170,000 VND per day. For heavy work, without a day off, she is paid 250,000 VND.

At home, Pham Hoang Viet, a new student at the Polytechnic College ( Hanoi ), works for hire. Sometimes he cleans the garden, weeds, takes care of plants, sprays pesticides, and sometimes peels longan for hire. This student's daily wage is less than 100,000 VND. He still has to try to make his mother less tired.

The shock to Pham Hoang Viet's family was the day he discovered a tumor in his father's brain. Two years ago, Pham Minh Duc, Viet's father, was the breadwinner of the family and collapsed when his eyes almost lost their sight. The whole family pooled together all their money to take him to the doctor. After being transferred to 3 hospitals in Hanoi, he received the results that he had a brain tumor.

At that time, the eldest son Pham Hoang Viet was in 10th grade, the youngest was in 4th grade. Viet's mother was a seasonal worker at Son La Sugar Factory. Every year, she only worked during the sugarcane harvest season. The remaining months, she washed dishes and served in restaurants to earn a little extra money to help her husband.

On the day Mr. Duc was about to have surgery, he and his wife asked their brothers to borrow more than 100 million VND at interest. This amount was just enough for hospital fees and some medicine. Since then, Mr. Duc has spent 3 million VND on medicine every month to maintain his health. This amount is exactly equal to the monthly salary Mrs. Hai earns. The whole family borrowed money to send their son to school in Hanoi.

Pham Hoang Viet used to be the fastest progressing student in history in Hat Lot town. Before his father discovered he had a brain tumor, his test score was only 3.5. When his father got sick, he was shocked and changed his way of studying. Viet's goal is to get at least 24 points in the C00 group. Viet dreams of entering Hanoi Law University.

Then, in the following practice tests, Viet's score skyrocketed. From 3.5 to 6 points, then 9 points, 9.5. In the final exam, Viet scored 25 points. "I thought I had to study. Only by studying can I help my parents in the future" - Viet confided.

But the poor student was sad when he got enough points to study law as his dream, but his mother would not be able to support him to go to university for the next 4 years. The family's income was only enough to cover living expenses and medicine for his father.

Many people advised Viet to drop out of school and go to work to earn more money to help his parents. But all his efforts over the years were in vain. Viet still dreamed of going to school, and his parents supported him to go to school. Viet's father used to be an aluminum and glass worker with a fairly high salary, but the job ran out of money as soon as he dried up. When he fell ill, he realized the reality of self-employment and instability.

Unable to go to university, Viet chose vocational college to graduate early, work to help his parents and still dream of going to university. “I prioritize having a job first to help my parents. I still dream of continuing to go to university when I have money to work,” Viet said.
