Recently, we had the opportunity to offer incense at the Bong Lai Ward Martyrs Cemetery. Our first impression was that the steps leading up to the memorial were paved with clean bricks, with fresh flower pots on both sides. Each grave was paved with shiny red stone, with vases of yellow chrysanthemums; the incense bowls were all replaced and neatly arranged in the middle of the graves.
The ward leader representative said: On the occasion of the 77th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (2024), the ward farmers' association mobilized more than 400 million VND from socialized sources to repair and embellish the martyrs' cemetery; cadres and farmer members in the ward directly supported working days for construction.
Youth Union members of Hoang Van commune regularly repair and beautify the martyrs' cemetery. |
Promoting the national tradition of “When drinking water, remember its source”, the youth union in Hoang Van commune regularly assigns union members to clean and sanitize the cemetery and grounds, and beautify the graves. Taking advantage of the cool weather, Ms. Duong Thi Yen quickly changed the incense burner sand, placed flowers on the martyrs’ graves, and cleaned the cemetery grounds to prepare for the upcoming candle lighting ceremony on July 27. She shared: “Every year, on holidays and Tet, especially on War Invalids and Martyrs Day, I and the youth union members in the commune spend time going to the martyrs’ cemetery to take care of the graves. Contributing to taking care of the martyrs’ cemetery is also an opportunity for our young generation to cultivate patriotism and the ideal of a good life.”
According to the report of the Department of Meritorious People (Department of Home Affairs), the province currently has 314 martyr cemeteries with nearly 26,000 martyrs' graves gathered. This is not only the resting place of martyrs but also a cultural and historical work with deep humanistic values, recognizing the merits of heroic martyrs who sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland. To pay tribute to heroic martyrs, in the period of 2021-2025, from the central and provincial budgets, the whole province has allocated more than 271 billion VND to repair and embellish 164 martyrs' cemeteries. In addition to investment and upgrading, all martyrs' cemeteries are assigned a team of caretakers to look after, clean, trim trees, etc.
Along with that, on holidays, Tet, July 27 every year, organizations, unions and armed forces in the province organize activities to care for and beautify cemeteries. These "full-hearted" actions not only show respect and remembrance of the contributions of previous generations but also contribute to promoting traditions and educating the younger generation.
