Commemorating the 143rd anniversary of the death of Quynh Phu Nguyen Dieu

On June 22, the People's Committee of Tuy Phuoc district solemnly held an incense offering ceremony to commemorate the 143rd anniversary (1880 - 2023) of the death of Quynh Phu Nguyen Dieu - an outstanding playwright at his ancestral temple in Ky Son village, Phuoc Son commune, Tuy Phuoc district.

Quynh Phu Nguyen Dieu was born on July 21, the 2nd year of Minh Mang (1822), died in the 33rd year of Tu Duc (1880), from Nhon An village, Phuoc Thuan commune (Tuy Phuoc district), the same hometown as Dao Tan and poet Xuan Dieu. He was famous for his good writing and good study but only passed the Bachelor's exam (so people called him Cu Tu Nhon An ) , because he was entangled in a tragic love affair and suffered, he could not pass the exam to a higher level. He did not take the exam anymore but opened a school in his hometown, spent his whole life as a village teacher, a simple but great master of Tuong, wrote immortal Tuong plays and trained many talented Tuong scholars, among whom Dao Tan stood out. Nguyen Dieu's life and career have not been fully researched and properly honored for many reasons such as he only lived in his hometown all his life. His remains were not carefully preserved. Previously, people only knew him as the author of the play Ngu Ho Binh Tay , the play Lieu Do was almost lost, and the play Tiet Giao Dot Ngoc was considered by some scholars to be by Dao Tan...

To honor the personality, great contributions to Tuong in particular, national culture in general and the priceless heritage that Quynh Phu Nguyen Dieu left for posterity, on February 1, 2016, the tomb of Quynh Phu Nguyen Dieu was recognized by the Provincial People's Committee as a provincial historical relic.

The highlight of this incense offering ceremony was that the artists of Dao Tan Tuong Theater (under the provincial traditional art theater) performed the play "Dich Thanh Qua Ai" in Act 2, excerpted from the play "Ngu Ho Binh Tay" with the theme of loyalty, filial piety, chastity, and righteousness by playwright Nguyen Dieu, serving the people in the region and the delegates attending the ceremony. This is also one of the best and most monumental ancient Tuong plays that has been passed down, staged, and performed through many generations.
