Recruiting soldiers in the mountains.

After the merger, Nui Cam commune is a large mountainous area with a scattered population and difficult transportation. Overcoming these obstacles, Nui Cam commune has still done well in the recruitment and conscription of citizens into the military and is determined to fulfill the conscription quota for 2026.

Letters from the mountainside

Nguyen Chi Nhin, a 19-year-old resident of Vo Dau hamlet, is the youngest of three brothers. His father passed away early, and his mother has suffered a stroke for over a year. The family's livelihood mainly depends on a small eatery, forcing Nhin to drop out of school in the 11th grade to help support the family. Despite his difficult circumstances, he proactively volunteered for military service. “Military service is not only a responsibility of young people to the country, but also an environment for training and growth. I hope that after completing my military service, I will find a stable job, help my mother, and gradually stabilize my life,” Nhin shared, his eyes sparkling with dreams.

During the 2026 military recruitment drive, Nui Cam commune recorded many cases of young men volunteering for military service despite their difficult family circumstances. Vo Quang Khai, residing in Thien Tue hamlet, is a prime example. His father works as a laborer, his mother runs a small business, and Khai, after finishing 12th grade, also worked to provide income for his family. When Khai was selected for military service, his family inevitably worried about the family's finances . Mr. Vo Van Beo, Khai's father, shared: "We know life will be more difficult, but my wife and I prioritize our son fulfilling his civic duty. Khai's grandfather participated in the revolution and is a war invalid, so the family strongly supports him training and growing in the military environment."

In another corner of Mount Cam, Nguyen Vo Minh Phuong, residing in An Hoa hamlet, harbors a dream of joining the military, stemming from stories told by her maternal grandfather, a veteran who fought to defend the country. After graduating from high school, Phuong applied to officer school but was unsuccessful. Undeterred, Phuong continued to enlist, hoping to reach the rank of officer in the future. Phuong expressed: “I’ve loved the military environment since I was a child. Joining the army is an opportunity for me to train myself, and if I have the chance, I will continue to apply to military schools.”

The geographical distance and difficult family circumstances could not deter Nhin, Khai, and Phuong from volunteering for military service this year. On the contrary, their burning desire to become soldiers intensified, and they strived to make their dream a reality with the enthusiasm of their twenties.

Meeting troop recruitment targets

Recognizing that selecting and enlisting citizens into the military is a key political task and the first target to be achieved annually, the Party Committee, local government, and the Military Service Council of Nui Cam commune have clearly assigned responsibilities to each member, each sector, and each area; seriously implementing guiding documents from higher levels, ensuring the correct procedures, transparency, and openness.

One of the major challenges in Nui Cam commune is the high rate of young people leaving for work elsewhere; many cases involve failure to register temporary residence, hindering management efforts. The area also has a large Khmer population, while some local officials are not fluent in the ethnic language. To overcome this, the Commune Military Command closely coordinates with the Commune Police, mass organizations, hamlet heads, security team leaders, and influential figures within the ethnic community… directly visiting each household to gather information and educate and mobilize the people.

According to statistics, the entire Nui Cam commune registered 138 citizens aged 17; and nearly 600 additional citizens aged 18-27 registered. Through the review, preliminary selection, and health examination stages, the commune's Military Service Council selected young men with good health, stable mindset, and readiness to accept and complete their duties. Major Le Thanh Dat - Commander of the Commune Military Command, Standing Vice Chairman of the Nui Cam Commune Military Service Council, said: "Completing the recruitment quota is the result of the process of identifying, managing, educating, and mobilizing young people. This is a target that must be completed at the beginning of the year; failure to do so will affect other tasks."

Five years ago, we met Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hanh, a permanent militia member of the An Hao Commune Military Command (now Nui Cam Commune), right during the recruitment season. Our conversation was frequently interrupted as she busied herself preparing logistics for the recruitment, going up and down the mountain many times to transport supplies and personnel. Eight years have passed since she started this work. She said: “Even with experience, I couldn’t have imagined the sheer volume of work that increased when the communes merged. However, thanks to diligent research and a thorough understanding of the mountainous terrain, the results of my work have gradually improved, keeping pace with the recruitment process and schedule.”

Fulfilling the military recruitment quota means completing a national defense task, achieving the first political target of the year, clearly demonstrating the leadership and management role of the local Party committee and government, the synchronized involvement of the entire political system, and the consensus of the people in this "roof of the Western region".
