Speaking to reporters, UNICEF Director for West and Central Africa, Gilles Fagninou, said that in just the last 3 months of 2023, serious violations against children in these 3 countries in the Central Sahel region increased by more than 70% compared to the previous 3 months.

Most of the cases involved the recruitment and exploitation of children to join armed groups, killing and maiming them. Mr. Fagninou called for an end to the escalation of violence so that children here can enjoy their basic rights.

The Central Sahel region is facing many challenges, including political instability, violence and conflict, food and water shortages, as well as issues related to climate change and the environment.

According to the United Nations report on children and armed conflict published in June 2023, in 2022, 423 children were killed in attacks by groups linked to the Al-Qaeda terrorist network, the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) organization..., mainly in the Sahel region.
