The problem is how to integrate, spread and become part of the urban space that is changing every day.
Suburban heritage
It is not difficult to see images of traditional activities of people in the coastal areas of Da Nang , from the rural markets in Hoa Vang, fishing festivals in coastal villages such as Man Thai, Nam O, to the sesame rice cake craft village, Non Nuoc stone village, Nam O fish sauce village... This is the "source" that makes up the soul of the coastal city.
While the city center is bustling with modern life, in the suburbs, these cultural values play a counterbalancing role, reminding the community of its roots.
Many folk festivals not only have spiritual significance, but are also associated with livelihood and professional pride, for example the fishing festival to show gratitude to the sea and pray for a bountiful fishing season.
Rapid urbanization poses many challenges to the cultural space of coastal areas. Many fishing villages are being reduced by coastal tourism projects; many traditional occupations are facing the risk of disappearing as young people are less interested in continuing them; some festivals are being simplified or “staged” to serve tourism.
In Nam O village, the famous fish sauce making profession once faced the risk of extinction due to changes in the environment and consumer habits.
In fishing villages, many young fishermen have left the sea to find work in the city, leading to the risk of cultural traditions being broken. Without conservation and adaptation policies, coastal culture may only exist in memory.
Realizing the importance of preserving identity, Da Nang has had many creative ways to bring suburban culture into urban space.
Many typical models have been implemented, such as recreating the Cau Ngu festival and the fishing village festival in the city center during tourist festivals, helping to widely promote the beauty of marine culture to tourists.
Community tours in Non Nuoc stone craft village and Nam O village with experiences of making fish sauce, weaving nets, and boating on Co Co river have both created unique tourism products and contributed to the livelihood of the people.
In addition, cultural space in the city is also focused on, expressed through a number of cultural and artistic streets that incorporate images of the countryside, the sea and traditional crafts, creating a connection between the suburbs and the city center.
Thereby, the culture of the suburbs is not separated, but is "translated" and integrated into modern life, becoming a highlight of urban identity.
Voices from the community
Importantly, the people in the coastal areas are also aware of their role in preserving culture. Mr. Tran Van Luc, a Nam O fish sauce artisan, shared: “We not only preserve the profession for our family, but also consider it as preserving the soul of the village. When tourists come, we are proud to tell our cultural story.”
In Hoa Vang, folk song and boat singing clubs are maintained, attracting young people to participate. Many schools include learning about craft villages and fishing villages in their extracurricular activities. This cooperation contributes to spreading the spirit of conservation from the community to the whole society.
The city government has determined that urban development does not mean sacrificing identity. In its planning, Da Nang has reserved land to preserve craft village spaces and encourage the development of tourism products associated with the culture of the surrounding areas.
Folk festivals are financially supported, improving professionalism while still preserving traditional spirit.
In particular, the program “One Village One Product” was implemented, helping products such as Nam O fish sauce, Non Nuoc fine art stone, Cam Le sesame crackers… to be promoted, branded and reach a wider market. This is a practical way to preserve culture through the economy .
In the context of globalization, many cities are at risk of becoming similar with similar buildings and shopping centers. Da Nang wants to be different, and that difference comes from the local culture, where the suburbs play an important role.
Building a sustainable, livable city is not only about infrastructure, but also about nurturing the cultural soul. When residents and tourists can enjoy modern space while feeling the flavor of the coastal village, the sound of festival drums, the smell of traditional fish sauce, that is harmonious development.
Suburban culture is not outside the city, but is a part of the structure of Da Nang city. Integrating but not dissolving, preserving but not separating, that is the principle for the city to maintain its identity in the development process.
With the right policies, the community's cooperation and the orientation of tourism development associated with culture, Da Nang is gradually building the image of a modern city with a deep identity, where the past and present go hand in hand, creating sustainable appeal for the future.
