The work is expected to break the record for paintings by this surrealist master.

The painting up for auction was painted by René Magritte in 1954 and is one of 27 paintings in the Empire of Light series, depicting scenes of dark street corners under a still-sunny blue sky, where windows are dimly lit.

In 2022, a painting from this series by René Magritte sold for $79.7 million at Sotheby's in London, England.

The work is owned by the family of the late interior designer Mica Ertegun, wife of the co-founder of Atlantic Records and a noted art collector.

Along with rare paintings by René Magritte, the collection owned by Mica Ertegun will also include a series of photographs taken by Andy Warhol. The auction is scheduled to take place on the evening of November 19 in New York.

René Magritte (1898-1967) was a Belgian surrealist painter. He is considered one of the most famous figures of the 20th-century Surrealist movement.

In his works, ordinary objects are placed in unusual contexts, challenging the viewer's reflection on the boundary between reality and representation in paintings.

Magritte also frequently obscured the faces of his figures. Some have speculated that childhood trauma contributed to Magritte's style. His mother committed suicide when Magritte was 14.

His paintings are currently on display in major art museums around the world .
