Xa Doai oranges in Nghi Dien commune, Nghi Loc district have long been famous as an expensive orange variety. While other orange varieties are sold for 30,000 - 60,000 VND/kg on the market, Xa Doai oranges in this locality were sold for 50,000 - 70,000 VND/fruit in previous years. This year, according to a survey, the price will increase, reaching nearly 100,000 VND/fruit. However, orange growers are still unhappy due to record low orange yields.

Mr. Phan Cong Huong’s family in Yen Phuc hamlet, Nghi Dien commune is one of the famous orange growers in the locality. Currently, the oranges have begun to ripen and are ready for the harvest on the occasion of Lunar New Year. The clusters of oranges are heavy with fruit, hanging down, and are golden yellow, making everyone admire.

Although the oranges are beautiful, Mr. Huong still cannot help but sigh, he shared: They look beautiful, but those are the remaining trees. Because out of a total of 200 orange trees, 70% of the trees have lost fruit. At first, the family expected to harvest over 20,000 fruits, but now there are only about 10,000 fruits, half of them, not knowing if they will still fall from now until Tet, the family is very worried, because all the care for the whole year is just waiting to sell on Tet...

According to Mr. Huong, this year, the heavy rain and frost have caused the orange trees to have waterlogged roots and record fruit falls. For the trees that still have fruit, he has to watch them day and night to keep the fruit on the trees. Many people have come to order in large quantities during Tet, however, he does not dare to accept deposits for fear that on the day of delivery, the fruit will not meet the required quantity.

Not far away, the orange garden of Mr. Nguyen Van Tho's family is even more desolate. Of the dozens of orange trees that are only 7 years old, only a few have many fruits left, the remaining trees only have a few fruits scattered on the trees.

Mr. Tho said: This orange garden last year brought in over 200 million VND in revenue, this year alone it is only possible to earn a few dozen million VND because all the oranges have fallen. This amount is not enough for fertilizer, investment, and effort... Regular customers have also called to place orders during Tet, I just told them to come directly to the garden to choose the fruit because there are not as many as before so I dare not close the deal.

Due to the record decrease in orange production, according to orange growers in Nghi Dien commune, this year they will sell at a higher price in the garden, ranging from 70,000 - 90,000 VND/fruit. This is not an easy price for consumers to access, however, because it is a famous delicious orange variety, many customers from all over the world are still willing to spend a large amount of money to enjoy it.

Mr. Phan Cong Duong - Chairman of Nghi Dien Commune People's Committee said: Xa Doai oranges have been the main crop of the locality for many years. However, this year orange growers are facing many difficulties because of the large number of oranges falling, not to mention some trees being affected by pests and diseases. Currently, the whole commune has about 30 hectares of oranges, of which 10 hectares are regularly harvested. On average, each year, the whole commune earns about 20 billion VND from selling oranges, however, this year it is expected to decrease by more than 50% of revenue because the number of fruits is not much left.

Xa Doai oranges in Nghi Dien commune are often called “royal” oranges. According to historical records, the origin of this orange variety comes from Europe, and was brought to the locality by the French to plant more than 100 years ago. What is more special is that only the soil in Nghi Dien area can grow this type of orange with such a characteristic sweet taste. If the variety is planted elsewhere, it will no longer retain this flavor.
