Responding to landslide risks

Mr. Zơrâm Buôn, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hung Son commune, said that the landslide occurred in the Azăt stream area (in Put village), causing 3 people to go missing, cutting off 200m of the inter-commune route; burying 5 duong houses and 4 hectares of rice and crops.

In addition to coordinating with military and police forces to search for the three missing victims, the locality focused on propaganda to stabilize people's thinking; cordoned off dangerous areas, installed warning signs, assigned forces to be on duty 24/7 and encouraged people not to go through areas with landslides or areas at risk of landslides.

At the same time, the locality urgently evacuated 171 households/665 people in two villages H'juh and Glao at risk of being affected by the landslide.

In recent days, the City Military Command has used flycams to inspect and survey the entire landslide area and search for the three missing victims. Through the images recorded by flycams, the landslide scene has many large cracks, about 1km northwest of the current landslide location, showing signs of continuing to move.

The most serious landslide area is about 1.5km from the Military Command of Hung Son commune, causing local isolation.

Mr. Nguyen An, Secretary of the Party Committee of Hung Son Commune, said that the risk of landslides may continue in other villages. The locality is coordinating with functional agencies to inspect and assess the risk of landslides in the area to proactively evacuate people.

On November 16, the locality coordinated with military, police, and militia forces to continue evacuating 56 households/197 people from Dading village to a safer area.

As for the large crack that appeared in H'juh village, local officials and party members are continuing to mobilize households that have not yet relocated.

[ VIDEO ] - Mr. Nguyen An, Secretary of the Party Committee of Hung Son commune, informed about the landslide situation in Put village, causing difficulties in the process of searching for missing victims:

Colonel Phan Van Thi, Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Da Nang City Border Guard, said that the landslide area is currently experiencing heavy rain, while the mud after the landslide is dozens of meters thick, making it difficult for forces and search dogs to access the scene.

Depending on the weather conditions, the forces will deploy appropriate search plans to ensure safety and find the missing victims as soon as possible. At the same time, they will maintain blockades at key locations to absolutely prevent further human casualties.

Actively reassure people

More than two days since the loud explosion that caused the landslide, the trauma is still present on the faces of many people in Put village.

Mr. Briu Bao, Head of Put village, said that the Village Front Committee and Party members were present at residential areas to propagate, reassure, and help people reduce panic.

Villagers also came to encourage and comfort the families of the two missing households. Youth volunteers joined the search forces, guarded day and night, and assisted in evacuating people in neighboring villages at risk of landslides.

[VIDEO] - Ms. Bling Thi Ung, H'juh village, Hung Son commune, is worried about the ongoing landslide situation:

For 87 households in H'juh village, although they did not want to, they were forced to leave their old residence to ensure safety. Amidst many difficulties, the spirit of solidarity in the residential areas was promoted to the highest level when people helped each other move their properties and supported the elderly and the weak who had difficulty moving.

Ms. Briu Thi Bhi (H'juh village) shared that when she moved to Ch'lang village to take shelter, everyone welcomed her, shared accommodation, and provided support. The local government arranged enough food and necessities, helping the people feel more secure.

Village elder Brao Nhau said: “Our assets and houses are still in the old village, but we are forced to move because cracks have appeared. I hope the local government will soon arrange a safe site for us to live stably so that we will no longer be haunted by the fear of landslides recurring.”

According to the Economic Department of Hung Son Commune, the landslide in Put village also buried the clean water system of Put and Dading villages. To ensure clean water for daily life of the people, the Commune People's Committee and the shock forces urgently pulled and installed 1,500m of water pipes for Dading village, 1,000m of pipes for Put village. At the same time, 3 1,000-liter tanks were arranged to temporarily store water.

“The steep and fragmented terrain makes water supply difficult. With great efforts, we have brought water to 3 residential areas in Put village and are currently deploying it to the remaining residential areas.

In the long term, we recommend that all levels pay attention to investing in sustainable clean water systems for villages," Mr. Nguyen An proposed.

Mr. An added that for the two households whose relatives went missing in the landslide, the Standing Committee of the Commune Party Committee visited, encouraged and gave initial support gifts. At the same time, it pledged to coordinate with other forces to soon find the victims.

During a recent inspection of the landslide situation in Hung Son commune, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Tran Nam Hung requested local authorities to continue to firmly grasp the area, proactively evacuate people in unsafe residential areas; pay attention to taking good care of people's lives during the evacuation process, ensuring that no one goes hungry.

Regarding the resettlement of people in H'juh village, the locality continues to survey and assess the safety level of the planned resettlement site; the city will support part of the housing construction costs.
