The president of the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture’s Agricultural Corporation, Orlando Linares Morel, said the program will be implemented as early as next November, once water supplies are secured. Large companies and specialized centers in the provinces of Pinar del Río, Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus, Camagüey and Granma will be responsible for planting 100,000 hectares of specialized rice, while the rest will be planted with the common rice variety.
The national rice cultivation program welcomes participation from all economic sectors, both for personal consumption and for the purpose of contributing to the industry and balancing the national budget. In addition to ensuring water resources, cultivation will be supported by national seeds, while the Vietnamese side, as a participant in the program, will contribute its own seeds.
In addition, the Cuban government will also facilitate economic sectors participating in the program to access foreign currency to purchase equipment and raw materials for production such as tires, spare parts, components and accessories for tractors, harvesters, industrial inputs and other resources.
According to the set target, Cuba will produce 600,000 tons of rice by 2030, meeting 86% of the national consumption demand. Currently, Cuba has to import about 350,000 tons of rice each year.
