On the afternoon of October 25, at the National Assembly House, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the occasion of his official visit to Vietnam and attending the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime.
Welcoming the special visit of profound historical and political significance by the UN Secretary General, the National Assembly Chairman expressed his belief that the visit will create new momentum, contributing to the continued strong development of the Vietnam-UN cooperation relationship, continuing the great achievements they have achieved together on the common path for peace and development over the past nearly 50 years.
The National Assembly Chairman expressed his gratitude for the sentiments and valuable support of the Secretary-General personally, and the effective contributions and assistance of the United Nations - a reliable and close partner of Vietnam in national reconstruction as well as in the current comprehensive international integration and innovation process.
Affirming that Vietnam always believes in, values and strongly supports multilateralism, the central role of the United Nations in global governance, the leadership and initiatives of the Secretary-General, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man emphasized that Vietnam will continue to contribute more effectively to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world, to the common work of the United Nations and multilateral cooperation, including international and regional inter-parliamentary forums, especially within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

On this occasion, the National Assembly Chairman informed the UN Secretary-General about the socio-economic development, ensuring social security and improving people's lives in Vietnam; at the same time, shared the National Assembly's efforts in creating and perfecting the legal corridor, governance institutions, internalizing international obligations and commitments, including many priorities of the United Nations such as implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and signing the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, which is being opened for signature in Hanoi.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his respect and special affection for National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, who was a member of the Portuguese Parliament for 18 years, and also expressed his attachment and support for Vietnam's struggle for independence and unification.
Expressing his admiration for Vietnam's socio-economic development achievements, the Secretary-General especially congratulated the results achieved in the recent rapid and profound reform process; saying that Vietnam is a successful model in promoting sustainable development, implementing commitments on green transformation, digital transformation, innovation, creativity and strong reform for fast, strong, sustainable development and better serving the people, which are good experiences that can be shared for reference by other countries and the United Nations.
The Secretary-General was impressed by the efforts and contributions of the Vietnamese National Assembly in this process and acknowledged the urgent and active activities of the current National Assembly session.
The UN Secretary-General highly appreciated the role, position and contributions of Vietnam through its example, voice, intelligence and concrete actions, especially in implementing the major goals of the United Nations, as well as participating in peacekeeping activities and chairing the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime.
Impressed by Vietnam's foreign policy as well as ASEAN's success in the region, the Secretary-General affirmed that the United Nations fully supports Vietnam in its cause of comprehensive development and integration, and supports ASEAN's central role in the regional security structure.
The Secretary-General also appreciated the active participation of the Vietnamese National Assembly in multilateral inter-parliamentary foreign affairs mechanisms, hoping that the Vietnamese National Assembly would continue to promote its active role and promote multilateral solutions to issues of common concern.
The two sides agreed to strengthen connectivity and promote cooperation mechanisms between the Vietnamese National Assembly and activities of the United Nations and relevant multilateral mechanisms, especially inter-parliamentary cooperation, in implementing global initiatives.
