QNgTV - Seafood exports to Japan are accelerating, reaching nearly $1.6 billion in the first 11 months and could set a new record this year.

The latest figures from the General Department of Customs show that Vietnam’s seafood exports to Japan are recovering. In 11 months, the turnover increased by 11% compared to the same period; November alone reached 161 million USD, up 9%. This development reflects the resurgence of demand in Japan and shows the more stable position of Vietnamese seafood in a market that requires strict quality control.
The growth momentum comes from changes in the structure of exports. Shrimp, a key commodity, continues to increase in both volume and value, demonstrating the stable demand of Japanese consumers for products with high technical standards. Squid and octopus maintained good growth, while tra and basa fish, which are not present in Japan, also increased sharply, with export value increasing by nearly 70%.
According to the Japanese Customs, Vietnam is the third largest seafood supplier to Japan, accounting for 7.4% of total imports. On the other hand, Japan is also among the three largest markets for Vietnamese seafood, contributing about 15% of the industry's total turnover. Maintaining a significant market share in the context of strong competition from Thailand, Indonesia and China.
However, according to VASEP, Vietnamese businesses still need to strictly adhere to standards on food safety, environment and traceability - requirements that Japan maintains consistently and is increasingly detailed. This is an important condition to expand market share in a period when Japanese consumers pay more attention to sustainability and transparency.
